"Of course," Mr. Swane replied, "If it is the genuine article, I am authorized to give you a number; but I can certainly relay your stipulations to the client if you wish."

"May I see the item?"

It's Saint this time, not killer right?

No, still Killer for a little longer - though Saint can now speak to Killer's mind and withhold magic if need be. I'll leave the internal monolog to you though haha!

"Yes, I should be able to verify the authenticity," Mr. Swane replied to the Saint (Killer).

He then raised an eyebrow slightly at UsdiYona's order, cleared his throat, and then opened his file on the table. Looking down, he read aloud some of his notes.

"A very interesting legend surrounds the piece," he began; "Originally given to the Mesopotamian King Marduk, around 2,000 BC, by the demon Beelzebub - Also know as the Lord of Flies - the Heart of Flies is purported to be the actual heart of the demon itself.

The artifact is an anatomically accurate representation of a human heart with nine black motes inside, representing the flies. They say that its authenticity can be determined, by peering into the heart at the right angle, which creates the optical illusion of movement of the motes (or flies) within.

"The heart is also said to be indestructible, though only a fool would attempt to test such a theory on such a priceless artifact. Especially since it is said to grant the owner nine lives. One for each fly within."

"There is brief mention of The Heart of Flies in Russian folklore, surrounding the legend of Baba Yaga. While not directly mentioned in later texts, there also seems to be a link between The Heart of Flies and the Russian mystic, Grigori Rasputin."

As Mr. Swane spoke, the Saint (Killer)'s spell confirmed the man's humanity. It was also clear that he was a Sleeper - completely oblivious to the realities of the hidden world.

Washington DC; Thursday Evening, February 8th 2018

The restaurant was a fancy one, which didn't really matter to UsdiYona, so long as the food kept on coming.

The Saint and Emend were meeting Robert Swane of Blume and Blumenthal to discuss an offer for the Heart of Flies. Mr. Swane had suggested the restaurant, offering to put the meal on his account as a business expense. Little did he know what he was getting into, when UsdiYona decided to tag along.

Just prior to arrival, the alarm Emend had left in the vampire haven under Club Perdition went off, indicating the two escaped vampires had just returned. Given the weight of the pending meeting, Emend sent out a text to Robor and Beats. They would have to handle it themselves this time.

Speaking of phone calls, Nicolette had returned Emend's call the other day. She was quite pleased to hear that Belial's Brood had been routed, but also seemed to hide some disappointment in her enthusiasm. Emend got the sense that the Camarilla had really been hoping the team had run into them - just for the obvious benefits such an encounter would mean for Nicolette's faction.

As for the Heart of Flies, Nicolette had no further info on it to give, other than suggesting that mages had always been trying to get their hands on it in one way or another.

"Will anyone be having desert?" the server asked, as she cleared dishes from the table.

While she did, Mr. Swane opened his briefcase. "I'm good," he smiled to the server.

Then to the rest he added, "Feel free. I just have to grab this file and we can get down to business."

Washington DC; Thursday Evening, February 8th 2018

Word came from Emend that the two vampires had just set off his alarm, in returning to their underground haven beneath Club Perdition. It had only been four days, since the disciples had assaulted the place. Whether the fiends thought the coast was now clear or they simply needed to return to the physical world to feed was not clear - though this did present a nice opportunity to tie up these particular 'loose ends'.

Unfortunately, Emend, the Saint, and UsdiYona were just walking into a meeting with Robert Swane of Blume and Blumenthal to discuss offers for the Heart of Flies, so this would be up to Robor and Beats.

Whoofa! Just checking in, to let everyone know I'm still alive haha!

The plan is to start things back up in September.

In the meantime, I started a massive new project, that will eventually lead into a new Fantasy BHB game system, following a Fantasy Novel for publishing.

Writing a Novel is one of the last major milestones on my bucket list and I'm determined to do it this time around!

At some point, I'll also start posting the World Building for the setting here on BHB in private threads (don't worry, you'll all have access). I'm open for input in that regard, and would certainly credit anyone who contributes (including monetary compensation) in the event it gets published.

Perhaps my weakest area in storytelling is dialog, so I'll be seeking a ghostwriter for help with dialog between characters.

In the RGP system aspect, I'll also need artists.

The rate I can foresee paying contributors would be 2 cents per word for setting material, 3 cents per word for dialog, and 10-20$ per art piece.

Anyway, that's probably my second biggest distraction right now haha!

We'll see how it goes...  ;D

Hope to have more time in August too.  :)

When we get back to it, what about two side quests?

1. Robor, Beats, and UsdiYona "Proactively" taking out the two remaining vampires, when they trip Emend's alarm by returning to their Haven.

2. The Saint and Emend, meeting Robert Swane about the potential buyer of The Heart of Flies.

“Get out!”

The Killer finds his chanting suddenly interrupted by… himself?

The words had just slid out of his throat in a coarse whisper, almost as if on their own.

Looking up, his confusion resolved itself. Across from him was himself, eyes burning with righteous fury.

“So you’re finally awake?” Killer said in a disturbingly playful tone. “Took your time. It’s fine though, I figured out a new way to have some fun. You can go back to sleep.”

“Get out. Get out of my head, get out of my body, get out of my life, you farking filth. GET OUT!” Saint shouted angrily, running towards the Killer and striking at him – only to have his fist pass through his mildly amused alter ego.

“You shouldn’t treat our body like that, self-abuse is seen poorly in heavenly circles.”

Saint clenched his teeth as he answered, “This is my body, not yours demon.”

Killer shrugged and gestured to Saint – “Then make your move. I’ve been wanting to cede control back to you for nearly a month now. Your priest life is boring. You’re the one who’s pretending to be held captive while you’re hiding in your own head.”

Killer then looked slyly at the Saint; “Could it be that you’ve wanted me to do what I’ve been doing all along?”

“Why do you think I would ever fall prey to the lies of a demon?” Saint shot back; “I know you, I know what you are, and this ends now. I silence your use of the power given to me by God, and soon I will take back myself. You cannot hold me back forever, and when I regain control the angels will purge you from me.”

“Leave now, while you still have a chance, and perhaps you will have a few more hours to live before I hunt you down.”

Killer smiled sadly at Saint; “Where do you think I’m going to go? I’ve only ever had one home, and it’s here”. He tapped his temple twice for emphasis.

“You’re lying to me again.”

“What do you think my name is, Saint?”

“I don’t care, I will erase it and you from history.”

“You’ve already tried.”

“If only I’d succeeded, how many lives I could have saved.”

“I’m not a demon.”

“You’re murderous filth AND possessing my body - of course you're a demon!”

Saint took a deep breath, trying to calm himself, but it clearly wasn’t working. Killer could see the holy man trembling with pure, unadulterated rage.

“I hate you so much that it burns me.”  Saint confessed; “When I think of the things you’ve done with my hands, I feel like every nerve in my body is screaming with pain, ordering me to leap at you and rip you to pieces. You are a monster, you are disgusting, you are evil, you are –”

“I am Giles Moreau.”

“A LIAR!” Saint screamed out.

“You’ve locked me away for so long Saint,” the Killer went on unfazed, “it’s unhealthy. Our mother sold our soul and it damaged us; but you can’t deny that part of yourself; you can’t throw the darkest parts of your mind into a dungeon and ignore them forever – it doesn’t work that way. The more you deny me, the worse this will get.”

“Accept me. Become me. We don’t have to be two halves. I’ll play along with your angel friends, and we can hunt together, kill together, save together. We’ll do what we have to. I don’t want to fight you Saint, you’re me after all.”

“You’ve spent too long in my skin;” Saint scoffed, “and it’s driven you mad demon. Especially if you think a servant of God would forgive the sins you’ve committed. I’ve seen your thoughts, as you lived with my fellow disciples; I know your lies and how you can lie; you will never deceive me.”

“I’ve told you what you have to do Saint. You’ll never get rid of me, it just doesn’t work that way. Until then, if you’re not going to do anything then you should quiet down – I’ve got work to do.”

As the Killer leaned back over the corpse and began the chanting again, he found himself completely unable to muster up any magical energy whatsoever.

“The power of creation was given to me, not you, monster.” Saint chided.

“I guess it was, wasn’t it?” Killer remarked. “I was wondering when God would realize his mistake.”

Saint grimaced. “He took too long.”

“Well,” Killer suggested, “until you get back, I hope you’ll still let me use it for missions. I kind of need it to keep your idiot teammates alive.”

The Saint didn't answer.

"I'll take that as an angry yes. I'll be going home now, we have some pretty urgent business to deal with in the morning. Would you like to wish the bishop good night?"

Again no answer. The hallucination of Saint was gone, but anger and disapproval continued to flash through the Killer's mind.

Well, this is getting interesting.

Disciples / Conversation Of One
« on: June 13, 2018, 03:24:02 pm »
Killer pulled up a chair and sat beside the Bishop, where he lay on his bed.

It was well past midnight. The urge had been driving Killer wild for the past two days; he’d been on the very cusp of turning his need to kill on Faith – but he wasn’t sure he wanted to do that just yet, as it would be hard to explain the girl’s death to the others. She was something to kill once he knew he was going to be found out.

Earlier today, Killer had told Miguel to go practice his possession skills, for when he would provide the ghost conquistador a new body, now that the Killer had acquired the skills necessary to do so. He wanted Miguel to get used to operating foreign flesh. Or at least, that was the excuse.

Killer had scried out the Bishop's location in preparation for the hunt, and on the way to the cathedral, he’d activated his life sights to keep careful track of all the people in the surrounding area. He’d forsaken his usual priest getup and had altered large and crucial parts of his facial structure in preparation – he now had dirty blond hair, a strong jaw, large cheekbones and tanned skin.

No way anyone would recognize him, should he accidently get spotted lurking around the Bishop's house.

Once Killer got to where his prey was located, he looked through one of the windows and began manipulating the shadows on the other side, having them unlatch the window for him to open.

From there, he cast human minion to usurp control of the Bishop’s body, not wanting to give him a chance to wake up and complicate anything. Once inside he walked up to him in his bed and pressed an elongated fingernail into his neck, injecting an extremely potent paralytic venom he’d fashioned using fantasia.

The man’s breathing turned quick and shallow, becoming panicked - as someone who could barely breathe - gasping for air. The Killer noted how the Bishop's eyes trembled, as if he was trying to force them open.

Killer leaned down and whispered into his captive's ear – “I’ve learned a few new tricks recently; I’ve been itching to try them out – they’re not very practical in a real fight you see; they are a bit more complicated and not even as effective as the others, but damn if they’re not satisfying to see in action.”

The old man released a weak moan, unable to shape any words with his frozen jaw.

Killer then pulled the old man from the bed and laid him out on the floor – he didn’t want to stain the sheets in a way that would bring his death into question.

Pulling out his prayer beads, Killer carefully traced them along the Bishop's skin – first on his legs, then on his stomach and arms, all while chanting the words for death, rot, destruction, pain. The rot spell twisted the helpless victim's bones; his flesh turning black; his body swelling as his blood thickened; his teeth beginning to fall out. His skin then shrunk, like drying rawhide - and where it got too tight, it simply split open. For all the pain he suffered, the Bishop still couldn't muster anything more than the weak moan.

Killer next drew the prayer beads back towards the Bishop's heart, and there he splayed them across the man's chest and pressed his hand down. This time, he reached into the Bishop's fading pattern and began to burn it - drawing mana from the old man into himself.

Picking the prayer beads back up, Killer ran them across the shriveled corpse and reversed all the visible damage to the body, then put them away.

“He died of a heart attack in his sleep,” Killer spoke to himself quietly, as he puts the Bishop back into his bed - tucking him in as he would a child.

“They’ll say he barely felt a thing. His veins were clear of any poison, his house was undamaged. My most horrific kill yet.”

So why don't I feel a goddamn thing?

“I can't kill worse than this. I can't hurt them any more than that. No one can. Is it the target? No, I feel like even Sarapheen wouldn't be enough at this point.”

Wait, Sarapheen!

Suddenly the Killer remembered how he'd initially planned on getting rid of the angel - setting up an ambush in the cathedral basement and sealing her soul so that she couldn't reincarnate.

It doesn't have to end when they die does it?

Suddenly, the Killer found himself filled with something the likes of which he hadn't felt in months, and he knew he had stumbled onto the right path.

Going through the Bishop's kitchen, he took a small tupperware container - not wanting to take something people would notice was missing.

Returning back to the Bishop's room, he laced his prayer beads around the container and placed them both on the chest. Maybe what Killer needed was to start collecting souls as trophies. The thrill of having to hide something so sinister from the others might reinvigorate his zest for life.

Beginning the spell, he hoped that it wasn't too late to still capture the dead Bishop's before it had departed the mortal coil...

With a little time on the computer, Emend was able to access Robert Swane's call logs. They appeared to be pretty mundane, being daily interactions between business clients, the office of Blume and Blumenthal, and his wife.

Nothing stood out as unusual, even when Emend spent time rooting out the clients themselves.

Using forces, Emend was able to see the account of the person that had called the Saint - a Robert Swane, using an AT&T cell service in the Arlington Virginia area. Trying to find the guy's call logs however, was a little more difficult, as there was an overwhelming number of places they could be on the internet.

Emend got the feeling that he could get what he was looking for faster, if he could actually connect to the guy's cell via a call. Baring that, he could try spending time at his computer, trying to root the info out - or maybe try to tap into the guy's phone while he was making a call himself.

Beats was able to pass between the stone pylons, leaving Robor to follow.  Fortunately, the mud things didn't seem motivated enough to leave the crater; and just sort of slopped back into the mire.

Using the personal items taken from the subway car, Beats focused for a few minutes, before locking onto the location of the two Belial's Brood vampires. They were in The City Without Foundation, far to the southeast, which would be the tenebrous reflection of the physical world's Washington DC.

Scrying in, Beats could see 'Vesh' - the middle-aged gothic rock-star vampire in the black leathers, frilly operatic blouse, and fishnet highlights. This was the one that had used blood magic to open the way into the vampire's haven under the nightclub.

The King Leonidas reject was also nearby, being the mature overly-muscled man in the cheesy leisure suit (and bling) that the other vampires had referred to as 'Ductus'.

Both lay sleeping on ornate marble slabs in an unusually bright and large atrium of some kind. They were surrounded by carefully arranged plantings of flowers and small colorful trees - the area being quite pleasant and park-like with marble benches, slabs, and trickling coi ponds filled with odd fish-like spirit-things. This appeared to be one of the upper levels of a massive multi-layered tower, open in the center.

Looking into the aerie of the eight hundred foot high tower, Beats could see other levels, both above and below. Each concourse was expansive and palatial - being occupied by a multitude of demonic-looking denizens. Some looked like guardians, some like stewards, while others carried themselves with the haughty airs of nobility.

There even appeared to be human slaves here and there, as well as other creatures more animalistic and base in nature and appearance.

Way down at the bottom, on the main floor, Beats could see a large bazaar of some kind, where transactions and trade of all sorts were being made between the hundreds of the hellish minions.

"Deal!" the hound hissed with supreme delectation, abruptly taking on shadows from the surrounding area. They cloyed around the monster for a moment and then seeped into its flesh - transforming it into something different.

The large Egyptian Mastiff's body changed from canid to humanoid, while the head remained the same - only the ears elongating to stand twice as tall as before. A royal Egyptian robe with blue and gold nemes head crown formed on him as well, while a long hooked rod of lapis lazuli and gold appeared in the air nearby.

The seven foot tall Pharaoh-looking thing reached out to grasp it - laughing.

"I AM RAKSHASA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

A sudden shame shot through Robor, as he instinctively realized that by making a deal with this devil, he had somehow made it even more powerful than it had before.

Rather than feel guilty about it however, he managed to convince himself that he really hadn't had any choice, and that it was somehow... for the better?

Robor could also sense the general direction of each piece of the demon's treasure, though it was hard to fix on an exact location, across the barrier between worlds. He suspected that he could pinpoint each item precisely when on the same plane.

Rakshasa meanwhile, smiled, looking down at the two disciples still stuck in the muddy crater.

"When you have gathered it all, then I will come and fulfill my part of our bargain. You may now leave the circle. A'nekh Djet!"

With that, the demon teleported away.

The mud spirits did not stop their plodding pursuit of Robor and Beats, at Rakshasa's departure however, mindlessly continuing to follow as Beats led them in circles.

Once again, Beats was unable to overcome the potency of the stone pylon's ward and ban.

Fortunately, the mud creatures were pondering and slow. It was an easy matter to outmaneuver them in the huge expanse of the boggy crater - and they seemed too stupid to actually split up in any attempt to corral or flank the disciples.

"What?!?" the mastiff hound scoffed at Robor's question; "Gads no! I guard treasures! ...Though, I suppose exceptions could be made to guard a person; but that would suggest I am a 'bodyguard' spirit, which I emphatically am not."

"Best you just give me an area to guard and some treasures to go with it - so as to avoid any potential confusion."

"I must admit that it all sounds completely fantastic to me, but the client is quite serious about making a very generous offer - If... the item turns out to be the original piece and not simply a replica or fake."

"Father Giles Moreau?" A voice asked, continuing; "I am Robert Swane. I represent the Estate Panning and Acquisitions Firm of Blume & Blumenthal, here in Arlington."

"It has come to the attention of a client of ours, that you may have recently come into possession of an unusual curiosity of ancient origin. A glass figure of a human heart, if I understand correctly."

"If you have such an item and are interested in learning more about its provenance or would be willing to entertain prospective offers for it, I would love to schedule a meeting with you at your convenience."

Down in the basement, the Saint (Killer) had just finished his oblation at the hallow, when his cell phone rang. It was an Arlington Virginia number, but not one he was familiar with.

Beats' teleport failed miserably, as he could not focus enough of his fleeting power to pull the spell together.

Robor meanwhile, tried to force himself across the barrier, but he too was thwarted - It had already been a long day, and he just wasn't feeling as if he had enough will left in him to overcome it.

"Really?" the mastiff sighed dramatically; "You're going to go that route are you? You know I could grant you power to locate all the pieces of my collection if you wanted. Recover it all and you would win my loyal services for one hundred and one years. I am a Guardian Spirit after all."

"No?"

As this went on, the mud things began to slowly advance on Robor and Beats' position.

"One 1920s Remington Rand portable typewriter with glass keys. The one Adolph Hitler used to write 'Mein Kampf' as a matter of fact."

"Ninety-two 'George the IV' gold sovereigns in a Wells Fargo bag."

"A blue on white Ming vase. Priceless."

"Eighty-one works of fine jewelry - gold, platinum, diamonds, emeralds, opals, sapphires, rubies, and so forth."

"A one-hundred-thousand dollar ransom in Canadian currency. The poor girl."

"The Righteous Judges' panel of the Ghent Altarpiece."

"And the Michigan driver's license of one 'John Warner' - mostly for its... sentimental, value."

"You will return these to me... or provide me the pleasure of seeing you beaten into the mud by the 'locals'. I'd be satisfied either way really. The choice is yours."

As the mastiff finished speaking, six large lumps of mud rose up from the center of the slimy crater. They continued to pile up upon themselves, until they were standing six feet tall on four thick columnar oozing limbs. Other than that, they had no other defined form.
