As for ‘grappling ships’, I have some rough draft rules for Mecha-Style vehicles that could work (basically a mix of vehicle combat with unarmed).

Did you want us to comment/discuss your Write-up here or in the The Asteroid Belt and Ceres thread itself?

By the way, I really dig the idea of Gatestones being found in the asteroid belt – it makes for a theory that the Gatestone Comet that crashed into the moon either came from the asteroid belt or at least crashed through it at some point on its way.

Hey cool – now I can ‘officially’ welcome you aboard  ;D

And I have to say that the stuff you’ve done for us is damn awesome!

I've helped out running conventions and written a few competition modules.

Hey, once we get the book out and things really take off, would you consider creating you own adventure modules for the game?  What about running something for us at Gen Con or Origins?

I agree; this is one of the reasons we wanted to have a forum with the game – for folks to be able to express their own ideas and suggestions.

As for the Official Setting Material (already laid out in the book), it is intentionally left with some ‘whitespace’ – like the old-school game maps: “Here There Be Dragons”.  We didn’t want Forgotten Realms level minutia, where everything was detailed down to the whether the prince hangs to the right or left of his codpiece.

This leaves exactly this kind of opportunity for GMs of the game – set some stuff out on your own and customize the setting to your taste.  And by all means share it here :)

Incidentally, when choosing which planets/moons to include in the core setting, we did set a logical minimum size requirement for colonization, with everything else being open for mining or other exploitation.  I didn’t include the Asteroid Belt in the setting, due to its incredibly thin density (“the asteroid material is so thinly distributed that multiple unmanned spacecraft have traversed it without incident”).  For asteroid mining, the rings of Jupiter and Saturn offered much more potential.  That, and I didn’t even know about Ceres until you pointed it out.

If you do want to do a Ceres Write-Up though, consider the following –

What is Ceres used for?

Who controls it?

How asteroid dense do you want the Asteroid Belt to be in your setting (or do the hard-to-find asteroids of the Asteroid Belt offer something you can’t get out of the other more readily available asteroids of the system – something that makes them worth hunting the Asteroid Belt for)?

Time in Hours to get there by Hypergate would be equal to travel to Mars + 8 Hours.

Also, this is something I can do myself (and there are plenty of folks out there that can as well) for free – no need to get a programmer involved :)

We got Access and Excel options –

The only thing I don’t have is a lot of time :(

But yeah, we should have something like this, but no hurry yet.

I agree with you there – and in fact, it is one of the reasons I keep my own Write-Ups under 200 XPs – it gives them room to grow beyond :)

And I am in no way suggesting putting any sort of XP caps on peoples’ characters or games – the above was only intended for consideration in Write-Ups.

One of the things I like about Bounty Head Bebop is the balance of Vulnerability vs. Survivability in the characters.  In BHB, XPs allow your character more options, but unlike other games, do not instill invulnerability.

A single punch can still as easily KO the character with 200 XPs as it can the zero XP newbie.

It’s the Luck and Surge Points that ensure Survivability and let a character shrug off the knockout blow – and those you have to use judiciously no matter how many XPs you have.

So here’s the first (unofficial) suggestion – feel free to disregard if you like  ;)

Write-Up XP Limit?

Should there be a limit to how many XPs you use in a build (kind of like 20th level in regular D&D)?

Personally, I have limited all of my Write-Ups to 200 XP and under.  I think this is a good benchmark for ‘Top Of The Heap’ type characters.

Thoughts?

Hi Warr – Welcome Aboard  :)

And I’m putting you on the Swag List for being one of the first to actually introduce yourself officially  ;)

We’re glad to have you with us – and encourage everyone who logs on to be creative and let us know what they think.  You never know, but what you add or suggest may very well be just what another GM or Player is looking for in his own game.

And I agree with you on the versatility of the BHB system for Space-Western.  Outlaw Star, Tri Gun, or others could be done.  I even have a rough draft of some Mecha Rules in the works as a supplement ;D

I think the setting is pretty cool too  8)

But seriously, it’s an awesome concept – bounty hunters in space ala the Cowboy Bebop/Outlaw Star/Trigun/Anime Space-Western genre.  And I like the way the feel is just a little past Modern, rather than full-blown Star Wars or Space Opera.  It’s familiar, yet futuristic – but not too far futuristic.  People still shoot each other with handguns, rifles, and shotguns, but there are lasers, just not yet developed beyond vehicle-mounted weaponry.

Another thing I particularly like about the game is the fact that it is set in the Solar System rather than the endless expanse of some entire galaxy.  To me, this gives it a comfortable size that feels manageable as a GM (I’m already familiar with our solar system and know where everything is).

Of course a GM is always free to establish his own setting altogether – and the game handles Modern and Far Modern Genres very well (and anything else for that matter) – I have already used it to play Shadowrun-style games, Classic Dungeon-Crawl Fantasy, and Oriental Anime Fantasy.  In fact, we plan to publish Expansion Rules along those lines, including a Horror-style Ruleset (and we already got Cyberware and Hexslinging done and standing by…).

So, come check out the game!

What Is Bounty Head Bebop?

Based in a time rife with criminals and unscrupulous people, the Police have resorted to using more Bounty Hunters and outside contracted help.  This is where you come in.  Set in a gritty near future, the game calls for fast-paced action and sizzling drama. Based on high-octane anime, Bounty Head Bebop is a wild ride through the new Solar Frontier.

Welcome to the Bounty Head Bebop RPG, the game that lets you play the fast-paced solar system-spanning anime-style adventures of the daring and brash bounty hunters of the ‘far modern’ future.

The Bounty Head Bebop RPG is powered by the Inverted 20 system, which uses a single d20 for all rolls and offers a quick and easy resolution for all in-game actions and outcomes, providing a fun and cinematic feel to play.

Dice
The Inverted 20 System uses a single twenty-sided die (d20) for all die rolls.

The Inverted 20 System
The Inverted 20 system uses a single twenty-sided die with Target Numbers (TN) to roll under and is essentially a percentile-based game in increments of 5%. Target Numbers are determined by adding a skill value to any situation modifiers that might apply and then rolling the die to see if the result falls within the TN. In some instances a Minimum Target Number (MTN) may be required, where the result of the die not only has to fall within the TN, but also has to meet or exceed the value set by the MTN.

As an additional element to each die roll, an X-Roll or X-Damage may be called for, which is determined by reading the one’s digit of the die when it is rolled. This allows a secondary number (1-10) to be generated simultaneously with TN resolution; meaning damage and other factors of success can be figured without a second roll. This handy little mechanic speeds play and helps move combat along at a refreshingly brisk pace.

The Inverted 20 system also uses a Luck and Surge Point dynamic that gives the characters an advantage when needed, and ensures the action never gets stale. Using Luck and Surge Points, a character can push himself past the normal effects of injury, succeed at a critically important roll, or even escape certain death.

In short, Inverted 20 is its own unique system, but with a familiar feel and a cinematic flair, which captures the grittier Anime genre after which it was modeled.

Hi Warr – Welcome and thanks for your input :)

See, I totally agree with you on the ‘Gertrude’ thing – I mean like you say, it seems to fit the character – And he probably would even just call it ‘Gertie’ for short.

As for the fighter, I sort of figured that maybe it was called the ‘Banshee’ because it was loud as hell or the engine whined in a unique sort of way when it flew.

Hawk and Raptor are good suggestions to – Just need to add something to the front or back perhaps, to make it more its own thing – Nebula Hawk, Raptor Eclipse, etc…
