Mountain Man Mayhem

After the 30 hour trip through the Hypergate, the Dandy Desperado exits into high orbit over Jupiter and makes the short flight to Europa. Being a water-world, there is no problem finding a place to set the massive frigate down in Capitol City.

Not long after, Captain Montoya, Natalia, and Ezekiel find themselves in the State Offices of the CPWR (Callisto Planetary Wildlife Refuge) looking at their shiny new Permits to Hunt Bounty within the Jovian Confederacy – no small task, considering the bureaucratic nightmare getting such a license would normally require. But this time, the process was a simple ‘sign here and you’re done’ – expedited by Captain Montoya’s new employer – the Onasis Naturals Corporation of Europa. Apparently, the Onasis Aristocrats who own and operate the Naturals Corporation (which in actuality, is nothing more than a fancy name for a logging company on Callisto) have quite a bit of political sway on Europa.

After obtaining the permits, everyone is met in a private conference room by Mr. Ray – the Bounty Broker and representative of the Naturals Corporation, who originally contacted Montoya to offer the crew the current job.

Mr. Ray takes a paper out of his briefcase and hands it to Captain Montoya. It is yet another permit – one that authorizes landing on the Corporation’s Callisto properties –

“The code there will get you through the security perimeter” Mr. Ray says, before reiterating what the crew is being paid to do.

“As we have agreed then; the Onasis Naturals Corporation of Europa will pay you a 600,000 writ bounty for one Jeremiah Jackson; wanted for the crimes of Sabotage and Poaching; to be turned in and collected here on Europa, at this State Office of the CPWR.”

“We have reason to believe that he may be holding up near one of the company’s abandoned mills at the following coordinates" (here Mr. Ray hands Captain Montoya a topographical map showing the coordinates and general layout of the area they believe the crew will find Jeremiah Jackson.

Sawmill No. 147, Callisto
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v651/BerkaZerka/Other/Callisto.png)

"You should consider Mr. Jackson armed and dangerous, but remember –" he continues, turning to look at Ezekiel as if speaking to a rock "– we don’t pay for a dead bounty. You must bring him in alive.  Any questions?”

Capt Montoya is on his best behaviour as everything is handed over and discussed, he has to keep his secret swashbuckling under wraps while authorities are around
after all.

"Just a few logistical ones my good man, is there any time limit, will we have competitors on the ground and is there anymore information on the type of damage he was Doing? Just thinking if he was running into Mills and smashing equipment with a wrench we will have to treat him differently from if he was assaulting buildings from a fighter or using explosives."

Post by: BerkaZerka on August 31, 2015, 01:34:07 pm
"You and your team are the only authorized agents on the ground," Mr. Ray replies.

"As for what he was doing," he continues, "blowing mills and equipment up with explosives and the like."

"Though his poaching is the more serious of his crimes," Mr. Ray says with a look that seems to suggest he is not joking.

"On Callisto, poaching is a capitol offense; So I recommend you carefully avoid harming any of the wildlife while you are there."

"Oh, and as for a time limit: Yes."

"Your Calisto landing code is only good for a week. Though if it comes to it, contact me, and I can have it extended as needed."

"Excellent, we do plan to tie everything up in a day or two but we will keep you informed of course!" He stands, clearly intending to sweep from the room in a polite but slightly frantic fashion. He pauses though and looks to his comrades

"Have either of you any questions?"

"Um, no I think I'm good," Ezikial replies, swiping a fancy fountain pen off Mr. Ray's desk while shaking the man's hand to leave.

Apparently, Mr. Ray didn't notice the pen go missing, or that his gold watch is now gone as well...

Natalia did her best, and her best is pretty darn good, to appear, likable, intelligent, and engaged. At heart she still feels 'along for the ride' and is beginning to feel very nervous about the skeleton crew she's a part of.

"You've been perfectly thorough, thank you. It's only a shame there's no bonus for express delivery."
Her delivery suggests perfect confidence, with a slight and appropriate sense of humor. She at least knows how to play the part. She rises to leave along side her captain, holding herself with professionalism and a lady-like charm.

As they leave Capt.Montoya begins moving quickly. "Right, this may well be a trap but we have to move quickly on it either way! If it is a trap then moving quickly should throw them off and if not,we beat the others in our bounty competition!"

He glances to the others in order to make sure they are keeping up

"As soon as we get back aboard the ship I'll change and do some more research into our target if you both want to get ready, I'll make sure moonkit is at least partly trained on the long distance weapons too,  just incase."

The team leaves the office and hurries back to the ship.

Arriving at the waterfront, where the Dandy Desperado is moored, a bizarre scene unfolds - the harbor is filled with SSPB watercraft and a four SPPB scout ships above - all circling the Dandy Desperado with lights and sirens blaring!

Not too far from the Desperado is a large marker buoy, riddled with 20mm holes  - and behind that - a luxury yacht, now on fire, taking on water through a torn up hull, and currently being hosed down by the harbor fire-ship.

"THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING! COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP OR WE WILL STORM THE SHIP! TRY TO TAKE OFF AND WE WILL SHOOT YOU DOWN!" An angry voice yells through one of the circling SSPB scout ship's external speaker system...

"Holy crap Captain! What a mess!"

"Moonkit my dear, I would never let a young lady go to jail. Also good shot, you destroyed a yacht on your first try!" he then looks to the SPPB ships and sends out an open frequency comm to them.

"This is Capt. Montoya of the ship you are currently surrounding, the only occupant is a child who is not trained with the ships systems so probably can't reply to you, if you would like to talk I am sure we can instantly sort this terrible accident out"
Title: Re: Mountain Man
Post by: BerkaZerka on September 01, 2015, 01:09:47 pm
"It was an accident!" Moonkit cries back, "I didn't mean to hit the boat!"

Over the comms, another voice replies - "This is Captain Rimcrest, of Europa SSBP. You say a child is onboard? Responsible for this incident?"
Title: Re: Mountain Man
Post by: Forge on September 01, 2015, 01:18:10 pm
He quickly sends a heavily encrypted comm to Moonkit "When we arrive act younger and less intelligent than you are, claim to have no idea about the systems and that you were just 'playing Space Captain' on the bridge when somthing happened but you don't know what"

He then replies to the officer "Yes, there is a young child aboard the ship, she stays in the captains quarters when we are in a meeting as it is the safest place, she must have been playing when she accidentally touched somthing on the bridge. Of course we will ensure all damages and problems are covered in full. We are here under licence to bring on a dangerous bountyhunter so the CWPR can vouch for our good intent."

He turns to Natalia with comes off "I think think this might be more your area, you able to talk them down a little?" hr then muses outlook "unless this is the secret societies doing, then we should board and blast through the blockade... I'm sure I have some Heroic music I could rig up to play from the ship speakers while we do."

Natalia had been looking at her permit to hunt bounties, thinking about how cool of a wall ornament and conversation piece it would be later, when the three came upon the scene.

Now she feels a little sick of the whole thing, it just became too real. Her eyes are wide. She drops character, she's confused, and a little worried.

'How is Montoya doing it? How is he saving face?

This whole scene is a chaotic improv, and he's just...acting like there's nothing wrong.'

"Uhmm..." She starts softly, then her eyes narrow, her lip perks up into an attractive, albeit mischievous, smile, "Talk them down? Of course I can, it's just cheap talk, and writs changing hands."

One of the SSPB Scout Ships lands on the dock next to the Dandy Desperado and an SSPB Captain and four SSPB Agents disembark.

With other vessels still covering the Dandy Desperado, Captain Rimcrest and his men approach Captain Montoya and the others. They are surprisingly reminiscent of that old Earth Movie about the evil empire or something. Maybe this makes Captain Montoya 'Han Solo'?

"I'll need to see your Permit to Pilot Spacecraft, Permit to Arm said Spacecraft, Permit to Hunt Bounty in the JPC, and your Insurance Carrier Card."

"If that all checks out, then you'll need to fill out an Incident Report, speak to the Investigators, and submit to a shipboard safety inspection. Oh, and bring the child out to explain what happened."
Title: Re: Mountain Man
Post by: Forge on September 01, 2015, 02:17:48 pm
Capt. Montoya took makes a show of happily and immediately complying. Taking out every single permit he has on his one by one, giving Natalia time to talk.
Title: Re: Mountain Man

Natalia had adopted her professional posture, the one with the lady-like charm, and held herself to look pleasant and reasonably calm. (Spend a luck point to activate Flawless Decorum)

"Captain Rimcrest, it's dreadful to meet under these circumstances. I'm Natalia Alashire," she pauses for a moment, to gauge his response, "This couldn't be what you imagined yourself doing today, I know I can think of better things. I assure that we'll take all necessary and preferred actions. Neither myself nor the captain lack for funds, so that aspect is a non-issue. And if there's anything that could be done to expedite the process and reduce the work load, I'm happy to comply."
Title: Re: Mountain Man
Post by: BerkaZerka on September 01, 2015, 05:51:36 pm
"Hey aren't you that movie star?," Captain Rimcrest asks Natalia, not really paying close attention, as he scans through Captain Montoya's Credentials.

"OK," he says, handing them back to Captain Montoya and then directing him to open his ship and call out the "child".

"Really bizarre about the Producer of your last movie disappearing like that," he continues chatting to Natalia; "Think he even has a Bounty on his head now, for running off with all the money."

The ship doors open and not suprizingly, neither Moonkit, nor the Captain's dog, come out of the ship, or are anywhere in sight.

As this goes on, one of the SSPB Agents steps up and hands Captain Rimcrest a printout. It's a Bounty Notice for Captain Montoya.

"Five thousand writ? Is this some kind of a joke?" he says, scoffing at the amount.

"You care to explain this?" he then asks Captain Montoya, holding out the warrant for him to see.

Title: Re: Mountain Man
Post by: Forge on September 01, 2015, 06:20:00 pm
"Ah I do believe it was a joke by my brother, he has an odd sense of humour. If you note the low amount, exclamation marks and the company name is simply my family name backwards then it should be clear that it is a joke."

He clearly wants Natalia to jump in but leaves whether to confirm or deny her identity to her. Here's an idea though.

"Ah, my  dear, the Captain needs to inspect the vessel he said, why don't you chat with him while he looks around and we find where our probably terrified youngster is hiding?" he says to her
Title: Re: Mountain Man
Post by: BerkaZerka on September 01, 2015, 06:44:04 pm
Captain Rimcrest hands the report back to the SSPB Agent, who takes it an runs something in on his notebook, as the Captain waits.

"Their JPC Permit is good sir," the Agent says after a few seconds. "The CPWR vouches for it."

Captain Rimcrest raises an eyebrow at this, but then turns to Captain Montoya, "We'll need to see the bridge and the upper turret, which is the ship guns that fired in the incident."
Title: Re: Mountain Man
Post by: Forge on September 01, 2015, 08:10:46 pm
"Of course, right this way." Capt. Montoya replies and heads for the ship, acting as if having them absurd was not seriously against his desires.

As soon as he knows the Capt. Is distracted by Natalia, hr quickly uses his arm computer to ensure defence systems are fully shut down so there are no more accidents and deff. Ensures that the Rc turrets are deactivated fully.

She'd been briefly stunned by his bringing up Franz, he was a generally agreeable guy, really not the best producer in her opinion, but he didn't seem like someone who would do that.

"It was a really weird situation all around. I'm out here to get some distance, new experiences, perspectives, meet people. We're after a poacher."
Title: Re: Mountain Man
Post by: BerkaZerka on September 02, 2015, 04:46:58 pm
"Ahh," Captain Rimcrest replies, "Be careful what you wish for."

Then nodding out the bridge windows, to the smoldering ship out in the harbor he adds, "As you can see, this can be a dangerous line of work."

Moonkit is found hiding under the covers on her bed (the tail of the Captain's dog sticking out, which gave her away). She is in tears and doesn't want to talk, terrified that everyone is going to be mad at her.  After a bit of encouragement however, she reluctantly agrees to tell everyone what happened.

She wanted to learn how to fire the ship guns like Captain Montoya had promised and somehow managed to bring them online manually. She saw the marker buoy out in the water and lit it up - only she hadn't noticed the luxury yacht anchored behind it. Needless to say, the quick bursts of the 20mm ship guns chewed right through the buoy and into the hull of the ship beyond.

Captain Rimcrest seems satisfied with her explanation and fines Captain Montoya 50,000 writ for failing to secure his weapon systems. He also fines the Captain an additional 5,000 writ for an outstanding bounty. Meaning the Europa SSPB gets to collect on it, without actually cashing the Captain in. Unfortunately, it also means the Bounty still stands for any one else that wants to take it up.

Four hours later, Captain Montoya has finally spoken to all the Investigators and filled out the mountains of paperwork such an incident entails. His Insurance Carrier agrees to cover 80% of the damage to the luxury yacht, leaving Captain Montoya on the hook for the other 20%, and raising his premium by 20%.

That means out of the 1.5 million writ of damage to the yacht, Captain Montoya only owes 300,000. It also means that if the team doesn't catch their Bounty, they lose their shirts on this venture.

At length, Captain Rimcrest and the SSPB release the Dandy Desperado and wish them the best of luck.

The crew will certainly need it...

The Capt. Waves them off, smiling as he does. Once they are out of the way and the door sealed with the ship preparing to take off he sighs and starts up the systems to he,p him fly to their destination, finding the best place to set down near their target using various maps from the net along with the tops survey provided for him.

Once underway he calls Moonkit onto the bridge with him.

Natalia takes the opportunity before Moonkit makes her way to the bridge, to have a short audience with him herself,

"Of course my dear, though their reach is rather far as you saw from the lies even the SSPD are believing. We can talk more once I have time to ensure we were not left any uninvited guests aboard." He taps his ear to signal that it might be possible for bugs to be listening in.

"For now it is suffice to say that you will be safer not staying on any planet for too long, from what I have found they can be slow to react unless you are their main focus."

Inigo calls after her "You did perfectly. You kept the Capt. Happy so we weren't arrested!"

"Sir, yes sir, sir Captain sir!"

"So, moonkit, you got the guns working on the bridge Sioux my knowledge, sunk a luxury yaucht and got us in as much debt as this entire bounty trip is worth not to mention nearly getting us arrested. So you will be needing to read this!"

He hands her a founded piece of paper with "Capt. Montoya's guide to swashbuckling" written across the front. Inside it has three points written in order.

1. Sink ships of the wealth or evil.
2. Get away without being arrested, preferably with loot.
3. Play appropriatly heroic music and wear a mask while escaping.

He gives her time to read it then asks "So what did you do wrong today?"

Gently, she laughs, "You know, he showed me that one...I obviously have no idea how he did it!"
Her enthusiasm isn't dampened, "Say, I'll bet we can look it up on the extranet and practice the folds," she pauses deliberately, "If you care for the company that is."

She strikes one of those smiles that's hard to turn down.

On the bridge, Moonkit begins to cower, as the Captain starts speaking. By the end though, she is relieved that he doesn't appear to be angry, though she looks confused when he hands her the guide to swashbuckling.

"I... uhm... I didn't wear an eye patch?" she offers weakly to his question.

A readout dings on the Captain's console.

It shows that due to currently freezing temperatures on Calisto, the nearest body of water large enough to maybe break through the ice to set the Dandy Desperado down in - is 155 miles southeast of Saw Mill 147, across a rugged wilderness of snow-covered mountainous terrain.

Assuming there's somewhere she can access the extranet on the ship, she does so, downloading the video onto her cellphone. (Surely the far modern future has phones up for the task!)

She takes a pain pill while she's at it and heads back to the lounge.

He glances at the readout "Hmmm, we are going to need a small landing ship. Ok Moonkit, you go practise your dramatic posing while I find a scout ship we can rent."

Hr waves her off and sits down at his computer to track down a small scout ship they could use for cheap

As Natalia and Ezekiel are messing with origami, Moonkit bursts in on them suddenly and strikes a dramatic pose.

"Watcha doing?" she asks, looking at all the stuff they've made.

"Is this a manhole cover?" she asks, picking up Ezekiel's latest attempt at a turtle.

Apparently, Ezekiel has an amazing knack for absolutely sucking at origami turtles...

Captain Montoya meanwhile, finds a myriad of starships for hire, but the standard fee of 100,000w per day, cuts too far into what little profit they'll make on their bounty.

At length however, he does manage to find a guy named Olesko Jones, who is willing to charter his Scout Ship (the 'Swamp Rat 9') at only 50,000w per day.

His only stipulation, is that the crew meet him at his ship and they fly on his ship. He's unwilling to hanger the Swamp Rat 9 on the Dandy Desperado.

He pauses a few moments they calls it to the others over the comms "So looks like we needed our scout ship afterall, we can rent one for 100,000 or one at 50,000 and travel on their ship. We would have to leave the Dandy moored for that one."

He pauses for a moment but Montoya k owns what he will choose in the end and goes cheaper, choosing the half price lift. first though some checks are in order.

He does full background checks on the owner, the guy posting the add, the scout and larger ship just to be safe.

At the same time he sends off a question to his contact at the company starting with the normal niceties but asking "We are heading out today but we thought that having one of your small un-armed company ships landing near a mill would be much less suspicious and might serve to draw him out compared to a completely un-known ship flying in. Would there be a chance of using one for this purpose?"

He also plans out his itinery for when he hits up his Armory.

- Sword
- Pistols
- Rifle with stun and tranc ammo
- dynamite (4 Sticks)
- trap making equiptment (tripwires, detonator caps and remote detonator devices)
- Armour
- SOL phone
- Arm computer never taken off anyway

He jots his list down with a 'more added later note' and waits for the responses to his searches and question.

The man is a part time bounty hunter with a license to charter flights. He has hooked a few smalltime bounties (nothing special), but has terrible reviews for his charter service:

He gives in an contacts the cheap option, booking passage for himself and the others to use the man's shuttle. He does not give the others details only that they are registered for hunting bounties on the planet.

He adds concussion grenades to his list to grab from the armoury along with the equiptment to set up a motion tracking RC gun.

He also starts rigging up an RC car with a stun grenade that he can drive then set off via remote control

After arranging to have the Swamp Rat 9 meet them in orbit over Callisto, the Dandy Desperado makes the trip to Callisto through real space – the Hypergate Toll being just too high at this point, to justify the expense.

Thirteen hours later, they arrive, and set a high orbit over Callisto.

Looking at the cold wilderness moon below, the crew can see that they have lucked out somewhat in timing of their arrival. An interesting feature of the environment is the perpetual twilight of Callisto. This ranges (depending on how the Sun is reflecting off Jupiter at the time) from a dull ‘daylight’, similar to an overcast day on Earth; to full blown star-filled night sky. Currently, the skies are lit with enough ambient light that working in the region around the sawmill won’t require additional light sources.

A signal from the Swamp Rat 9 then comes in.

“This is the Swam Rat 9 to Dandy Desperado; Coming in for passenger transfer. I’ve got docking clamps, so suit up. I’ll hook on yer underbelly.”

Through the Bridge windows, everyone sees the most dilapidated piece of flying refuse they have ever laid eyes on. It’s absolutely amazing that the thing can fly, let alone hold air in against the cold vacuum of space…

A few minutes later, the rusted-out-shit-box of a ship clanks loudly off the hull of the Desperado and then magnetically clamps down near the lower space hatch.

“All aboard!,” Captain Olesko Jones says with a laugh – “Oh, and you’ll want to keep yer suits on. Won’t be any air in here, till we get down to the surface.”

OK… so maybe it doesn’t hold air against the cold vacuum of space after all…

"Thanks Moonkit. I'll bet you can learn it too, if you want."

Natalia notices that Ezekiel has gotten a little down about the whole thing, which is a little disheartening since she'd been having allot of fun, especially the humor she got out of some of her more spectacular duds.

"So, Zeek. When you and Montoya bust in there and put the kibosh on this Popsicle hunt, what's your skill set?"

She laughs a little to cover her awkwardness, realizing that Ezekiel and Montoya might very well expect her to have boots on the ground...she thought she'd signed up for babysitting...It was clearly needed!

"Yar me hearties! Time to suit up and ship out!" Montoya announces through the comms. Ezekiel will know that this means he has changed into his swashbuckling outfit including bandana, pistol belts and sword buckled specially to show off the austentacious bits to full effect. He also has his rifle and the other forementioned gear in a small case he has clipped to his personal vac suit.

Then in a normal voice "Just keep an eye on this lift of ours, not the best reputation, Moonkit and Vicini will be holding the Dandy unless our young lady would prefere to keep her company and man the ships guns incase of betrayal? Ah the systems have been locked down more fully, you'll need the password 'Vengance' to unlock the guns moonkit!"

As he talks he heads to the port side airlock ready to get things moving

"Wait, are we boarding by space walk?"

Natalia admits to herself that Moonkit probably knows how to use the guns better than she does. It's weird, that both of these bounty hunters want her along, expect her along. What do they think she can do exactly? Lull the bad guys into a false sense of security with a smile and autographs?

Natalia heads off to put on her skin suit, then packs all her permits, a handful of pain pills (9) three anti toxin, three antirad, her deck pistol, all her permits, her armored vest, and an elegant and warm winter wear outfit.

"Oh just a short one!" Montoya happily replies "remember that you are free to raid the armoury and make sure to have some tranc rounds and stun grenades handy, great things for hasty retreats! Can't even blow your hand off it you mess up!"

He waits till the crew is assembled and ready to airlock

"Oh and moonkit, remember that you have the bridge so if any SSPD come you act young and I can be reached on my SOL phone. If we are betrayed and our pilot try's to abandon us, blow his ship up ok? Ah and I left a captains hat on the bridge for you."

'I guess I'll have to go then. Well, I don't have to, but...'

Natalia grabs her SOL phone and makes sure her 'collection' (*Cough* drugs *Cough*) is secured, for Moonkit's sake, before picking up the suggested supplies from the armory. It helps her to think of the dangerous weapons as meager props. She grabs some paper, passing back through the lounge, decided that making origami turtles is a pretty cool thing to do.

She really would have happily chosen to stay with Moonkit and the dog until she thought of something instantly terrifying:

She would be on board The Dandy Desperado, a ship that she does not know how to pilot, her soul companions a dog and a child, orbiting a heavenly body she knows almost nothing about, for an unknown amount of time, with an unknown person pursuing her, and to top it all off, if something goes wrong with Montoya and Ezekiel, she might not even know what happened, ever. Somehow, she'd much rather board the Swamp Rat...

All that aside, she looks damn fine in her skinsuit.

Captain Montoya, Ezekiel, and Natalia, leave Moonkit (and the dog) aboard the Desperado and head out the hatch on the underbelly of the ship. It is an absolutely exhilarating experience for Natalia, being weightless and floating the short distance between the hatch and the Swamp Rat 9 - its airlock open to receive everyone. For the Captain (and even Ezekiel), it's not their first time free floating in space.

Once aboard the Swamp Rat 9, the airlock closes and Olesko Jones comes over the comms from the currently sealed bridge.

"Welcome aboard! This is your Captain, Olesko Jones speaking, please avoid leaning too hard on the airlocks - they tend to open and close on their own haha!"

With that the ship releases its grip on the Desperado and maneuverers itself into a descent towards the surface of Callisto.

A few moments later a red warning light abruptly begins flashing in the cabin and Olesko Jones comes back on the comms (an alarm bell ringing in the background) - "Farkers got a lock on us! This some kind of joke?!?"

A moment later, another voice hails everyone over the radio – “This is Callisto Traffic Control. You have failed to transmit your Callisto airspace authorization code. Please do so immediately or redirect your course away from Callisto. If you do not comply, you will be shot down."

"Standing by for code transmission.”

"Code?!?" Olesko Jones yells, "You didn't give them your code in advance? Shit! What's the code?!?"

Natalia floats blissfully, they'd intended to actually put her in space for the scene, but it just didn't work out that way. It left her with a custom made skinsuit barely worn. While made to be fully functional, it was still made for Hollywood. It therefor deliberately accentuates her assets.

They'd even gone as far as coaching her on what to do in this environment. It comes to her naturally.

"Code?!?" Olesko Jones yells, "You didn't give them your code in advance? Shit! What's the code?!?"

When the alarms go off, she doesn't panic quite like one might imagine. She centers up and even looks for a moment like she might be planning to do something.

Montoya immediatly sends the code to Jones as well as out over open comms to be safe and ensure that they hear it.

No less, Montoya handles it. 'He's a very strange man,' she thinks, 'however a dependable one I think.'

She waits, anticipating with positive outlook what might happen next.

"Authorization Code confirmed," the voice over the radio replies - “You are cleared to land. Please have a nice day.”

(That last bit, about having a nice day, sounds a little cheeky – as if the guy enjoys threatening to blow ships out of the sky a little too much.)

Sawmill 147
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v651/BerkaZerka/BountyHeadBebop/SawMill.png)

Sweeping down to the surface, the Swamp Rat comes in over the coordinates of the abandoned sawmill and lands at the edge of a large clearing just south of the building. As it does so, Natalia thinks she spots someone (or something) moving quickly from the loading dock and into the sawmill itself (but whatever it is is obscured by shadows). Other than that, there doesn’t appear to be anyone around.

As the hatch of the scout ship opens, a crisp chill blows in.

It is currently below freezing in the area, with a foot deep snow covering the thick pine forest all around – except for the clearing itself, which is nothing more than a vast pit of frozen windswept mud. Torn up and gouged by the treads of heavy machinery during the warmer seasons, the uneven ground will be somewhat difficult to traverse if one isn’t careful.

A rusty derelict crane sits to the south of a four foot high concrete loading dock off the mill, once used to move cut and banded lumber onto transport vehicles, though it appears to have had its engine compartment blown apart at some point.

A tall pile of sixty foot logs also rests near the mill, where under normal operations, they would be pulled by an overhead crane in the mill room and onto a giant table saw inside.

Montoya flourishes a quick bow to the ship "We will return shortly my good captain with bounty in tow."

He then takes a couple of steps forward, standing in full pose mode "Well then we have already been spotted, prepare to move in and subdue the bounty!" he looks like he is about to begin matching instantly when he glances at Natalia "Ah, my dear if you could stay safely behind us to act as a spotter that would be appreciated"

Thinking he had been appropriately manly to the lady in order to keep her from harm he begins carefully making his way towards the western edge of the mill, loading normal bullets into his rifle as he goes.

As they get closer, Ezekiel heads to cover the large opening where the logs are piled, while Captain Montoya reaches the loading dock, near the crane.

At the crane, Captain Montoya can see into the mill itself – a wide open area with a thick carpet of sawdust that houses a giant table saw, control room, generator, and an overhead crane used to pull logs in from the log pile outside and place them on the giant table saw. A few kerosene burning torpedo heaters (each about three feet long and secured to a pallet) are located in the corners or the mill room floor, used during normal operations to warm the area; though it is clear from their rust that none have been lit in quite a while.

From the log pile, Ezekiel can see into the opening that allows logs to be pulled into the mill by the overhead crane. Beyond that is the giant table saw (composed of a long row of six-foot circular blades) - used to simultaneously cut multiple logs into more manageable lengths of lumber, beams, and planks. Across from the saw, toward the back of the mill, Ezekiel can also see the control room – accessible by a set of metal stairs and standing on thick timber posts fifteen feet above the mill room floor, so as to afford a clear view of the giant table saw in operation.

Various items of storage and large pieces of equipment have been stowed in the space under the control room, including about a dozen or so fifty-gallon drums of kerosene and fuel stacked on pallets.

No one appears to be in the area…

Post by: Forge on September 09, 2015, 12:45:35 pm
The Capt. pauses for a moment then decides he has to 'get into the mind' of the whole situation, not just the bounty head for this. he blatantly begins reenacting some maneuvers like preparing to swing from a rope held by the ceiling crane while swinging his sword and leaping over the burning brazier ending with a short dive and roll as is leaping away from a giant explosion.

Assuming he isn't shot at for these few moments he then spies back inside the area while mumbling to himself "So the bugger hasn't hung any ropes from the ceiling and the large heaters aren't even lit! How does he expect me to make a heroic entrance like this? At least he has piled up enough Kerosene here to blow the entire place sky high."

Not being able to find his tranc rounds, or remember if he actually owned any in the first place, he loads up thumper rounds instead. "Well got to locate the target for my glorious entrance at least."

He sends in his RC car to drive through the mill to see if it's movement flushes the bounty head out.
Title: Re: Mountain Man
Post by: BerkaZerka on September 09, 2015, 01:08:13 pm
Captain Montoya also remembers that his thumper rounds are only for the flintlocks. If he uses his rifle, it will be to kill (or seriously maim).

The R/C car drives through the mill with no problem. It occurs to the Captain that mounting a camera on it could be useful sometime...

Ezekiel meanwhile, climbs up the log pile and onto the giant saw table, careful not to step on anything that could suddenly begin moving underneath him.

Post by: Forge on September 09, 2015, 02:43:48 pm
Ooc: I thought about the cam but it wouldn't fit his obvious flaw to put one on right away lol

He loads the flintlocks with the thumpers and readies his rifle to wound the target first, a couple of bullet wounds never hurt anyone right?

He gets on their private comms "Natalia my dear, it seems safe to move up a bit but don't get too close too fast, he might try to escape us and steal the ship so best if you keep an eye on it too." Then seeing Ezekiel "Good man, that will make things more exciting once they start up the crane and the saws!"

He brings his RC car back to him then quickly uses his arm computer to scan for any computers, detonators or wireless signals in or close to the building.

"Crap, that was too close!" Ezekiel says, heading back up the wrecked stairs to get into the now opened control room.

Inside the control room are all the controls used to operate the saws, as well as the overhead crane used to feed logs from the Log Pile outside onto the Giant Table Saw. Because the mill generator has apparently been sabotaged however, there is currently no power to the Control Room.

A cursory look around by Captain Montoya confirms that the mill generator has been blasted with dynamite and is totally useless. He sees no other sign of anyone about though.

Before Natalia moves up, she looks over at Jones, "So, would you call this your, 'run of the mill' bounty hunt? Or what?"

She walks towards the mill over the frozen mud. She doesn't necessarily want to get any closer, but... It's on Montoya's suggestion, why not?

She is wearing her armored police vest and has drawn her deck pistol.

"It looks that way but you think you saw something so I'll trust your eyes. Natalia my dear, if you could hold ground near the loading dock and keep an eye on the ship. Ezekiel can check the last of the interior for hiding spots along with the wood pile and Eastern side and I'll check the tree line in case he went that way, keep eyes peeled for movement and signs of the snow being disturbed!"

He then heads round the back, totally forgetting to be subtle again and still playing his music (It's a 10 minute piece after all and it would be a shame to stop it part way through) to scan the tree line and the snow for signs of recent activity.

Looking around, Montoya notices (with a luck Point) some suspicious scrapes on the floor, near the edge of an oil-drum pallet, stored under the control room.

A moment later, outside, something under the snow clamps down on Ezekiel's leg with a loud clang, as he is looking around the tree line (8 Damage + Bum Leg Flaw). Ezekiel yells out and tries to withdraw his foot, but finds that he is held in place by a steel bear-trap (chained to the ground).

Captain Montoya meanwhile, discovers that the oil-drum pallet is actually just empty drums banded to the pallet - and that the pallet is banded to the outside of a steel trapdoor in the floor underneath it. The way it is set up, the pallet covers the trapdoor perfectly and will open and close with the trapdoor.

Captain Montoya is able to break the pallet and drums free of the trapdoor, but soon discovers that the steel door in the concrete floor is apparently barred closed from the inside.

It takes a decent amount of time to roll all the oil drums out from under the control room, but once that is done, Captain Montoya is able to use his Demolition skills to place a three-stick dynamite charge over the trapdoor.

The charge goes off, blasting the steel door open and wrecking the underside of the control room above, but otherwise being a complete success.

The smoking hole reveals a steep set of rough-cut timber stairs going fifteen feet down. At the bottom of the stairs is a landing, where two tunnels lead out – one to the east and one to the south that drops down at a gentle slope. Also in the chamber is a beat up old deep freezer along the north wall.

While there is no power down here to plug the deep freezer into, it stays cold because of some large blocks of ice, a number of frozen trout, and some wrapped deer steaks kept within.

Montoya looks around then nods "Once we get the bountyheads, we take the steaks too!" He looks to Ezekiel "You better go right and I'll take left, people never choose left! Natalia can guard the exit or come with one of us!"

Clearly excited again he starts moving down the eastern corridor, looking for traps as he goes.

Natalia bites her bottom lip gently, disliking the situation no matter which way you cut it.

"I'll go with you." She whisper's to Montoya.

She follows 6 or 7 feet behind him, watching where they've come from more than where they're going.

"Right then," Ezekiel replies, cautiously heading down the slope to the south.

As Captain Montoya moves up the east tunnel, followed at a distance by Natalia, two large hounds abruptly leap from a five foot high ledge in the darkness up ahead to attack!

What's really surprising however, is that the beasts are actually mastiff poodles – large and white, with short curly hair – though certainly not bobbed or cut into ridiculous poofs. That, and the dogs don’t bark or growl. They have obviously been trained to hunt and guard with a sense of stealth.

She raises her deck pistol and, taking a moment's aim, fire's at approaching canines. Hitting one isn't necessarily her goal, but gunfire is as good a reminder as any that someone has your back.

Natalia heads to where she heard Ezekiel fall. Looking over the edge, she sees Ezekiel clinging to the side of the sixty food deep well.

"Ack... Got a rope?" he coughs weakly.

---

Captain Montoya meanwhile, chases Jeremiah out the trapdoor and across the mill to the loading dock.

There, Jeremiah holds up and spins around to face Montoya, bringing an old double-barrel shotgun to bare (but doesn't fire). Montoya is just about to let loose with his second flintlock, when someone atop the log pile yells "Freeze! Don't Move!"

Montoya looks and sees two mountain men with rifles at the opening to the saw table. There also appears to be another mountain man set up on the crane with another rifle.

A transmission comes over Montoya's Comm, though Natalia hears only more static.

"Tried to warn you boss!" Olesko Jones' voice says from aboard the Swamp Rat 9, as it circles over the mill. "Afraid I can't help you with this one; but I'll stick around to see if anyone's left to give a ride to afterwards haha! Good luck. You'll need it!"

---

Outside, the Mountain man leader replies to Montoya - "Glad to see you're willin' to talk with words, rather than lead."

"So, this Bounty," he goes on motioning to Jeremiah, "paid for by the Onasis Naturals Corporation, right?"

"Well, the Onasis Naturals Corporation CEO, Montague Onasis the Fourth has a thing for staging his own little ‘Martian Hunts’ – you know the kind, where some poor shlub is released into the wilderness, only to be tracked down and killed like some kind of animal."

"Old Monti hit a snag in his hunts though, when he got a hold a Jeremiah Jackson. When Jeremiah managed to escape the hunt, Montague was tee’d off enough to put a bounty on ‘im, just so he could try again.  Sort of a ‘redo’ if ya will."

"But yeah, imagine his old Monti’s embarrassment when Jackson escaped a second time."

"Humph! The guy's an amateur," Jeremiah spits.

The mountain man leader shakes his head and continues - "Ya might say Montague Onasis the Fourth has become a little obsessed with Jackson. He won’t stop till he gets him under his own set of rules."

"This here is the fourth time Jackson’s been bountified."

"You guys will take him to Europa and he’ll be back here on Callisto within a few hours, once again playing in old Monti’s twisted game. And when Jackson gets away again, the whole mess will start all over."

"Except this time, we’re gona to put a stop to it before it starts..."

Looking around, Natalia finds that a bed, table, and kerosene heater occupy a bunker-like area nearby, the chamber of which is ten feet lower than the level of the Landing above.

A set of storage shelves, full of supplies and equipment, has also been built into a natural recess in the north wall of the chamber, while another steep passage exits the area at a forty five degree slope (requiring a Climb roll to navigate) to the northeast that heads up to the Rise.

The equipment on the shelves consists of a breaking and entering kit, construction tools, optical binoculars, an outdoor gear kit, and a half dozen signal flares.

Topside meanwhile, the Mountain Man Leader replies to Captain Montoya - "Yeah, that's the idea; but we never know where they take Jeremiah till after the fact. They keep the locations of their hunts a secret."

"We got this though," he continues, producing from his pocket a tracking device about the size of a flashlight battery.

“This here is a Net activated tracking beacon. It goes in Jackson..."

"AW HELL NO!" Jackson protests...

"Not that way Jackson!" the leader replies, "Surgical-like."

"DAMN STRAIGHT! SURGICAL LIKE!" Jeremiah affirms with a nod.

The Mountain Man leader waits to make sure Jeremiah is done - and then continues - "Then we wait till he’s back on Callisto. At that point, the tracking device will self-activate across the Net and show us where they take him for their hunt."

"Only this time Jackson won’t be alone. Me and my boys will be there with a nice little surprise for Ol’ Montie…”

The Mountain Man leader stabilizes Ezekiel, then performs impromptu surgery on Jeremiah Jackson.

As this goes on, the dead dogs are taken out and gutted by the two of the other mountain men for their meat. Guess Jeremiah wasn't as attached to them as it seemed.

Exploring the rest of the bolt hole meanwhile, Nataliah finds that the two mastiff poodles were kenneled on the natural shelf of the Rise chamber – in two large cages along the north wall.

Also in the chamber is a supply of dog food and a narrow passage leading out to the east.

The passage leads one hundred and fifty feet east at a slight upward slope, where it ends at a rough-cut timber ladder with a shovel leaning nearby.  The ladder climbs ten feet up to a trapdoor above that would normally open under some brush east of the sawmill.  Currently however, the trapdoor is snow-covered and frozen shut.  Jeremiah Jackson was recently using the shovel in an attempt to force open the trapdoor, but had to abandon his efforts when the team discovered his bolt hole.

Not wanting to face everyone in the cramped confines of the narrow passage, Jeremiah left the shovel and hurried back to the main tunnels, before the steel trapdoor was blown open.

---

Following the surgery – a net activated tracking beacon tucked safely under Jeremiah's skin - the team takes Jeremiah aboard the Swamp Rat 9 to ferry everyone back to the Dandy Desperado.

Olesko Jones sells Captain Montoya a ratty old skinsuit for Jeremiah to wear and the rickety deathtrap of a ship takes off.

Once again, the ship is challenged for the passcode by the Callisto Air Authority for safe passage off the moon, but Olesko Jones has it ready this time. Then, during the accent into space, Jeremiah's skinsuit springs a leak, but some of the patches that come with the Captain Montoya's Vacc suit are able to take care of it.

"Sorry, no refunds!" Olesko Jones laughs over the comms.

Once clamped onto the underbelly of the Dandy Desperado - everyone spacewalks back to their ship and Olesko Jones takes off.

"Pleasure doing business with ya!" he is heard over the comms before signing off.

Moonkit meanwhile, has miraculously managed to stay out of trouble this whole time, though she does complain a bit that she "would have won more, had the dog not cheated while playing chess."

Other than that, she is very happy to see everyone - except curls her nose when Jeremiah walks in.

"Eeeew he stinks!" she exclaims; her manners briefly yielding to the rancorous stench of the well-pickled mountain man.

Indeed, the man does pack a powerful olfactory punch.

---

Once the Dandy Desperado lands back on Europa, the crew has no problem turning Jeremiah Jackson into the CPWR (Callisto Planetary Wildlife Refuge) and collecting the 600,000 writ reward. Jackson is whisked away and not seen again, leaving team to wonder at his fate.

A few days later however, and a news story over the Net tells them all they need to know –

“The CEO, Montague Onasis the Fourth, of the Onasis Naturals Corporation of Europa, was killed recently in a hunting mishap during a trip to Callisto. On a quail hunt at the time, the CEO died of injuries sustained from a fall over a cliff when the trail gave way beneath him and his hunting party. There were no survivors.”

Somewhere out there, Captain Montoya can sense the Mountain Man leader grinning broadly, as he throws a salute to the dark Callisto sky.

THE END
