This is to report problems with connectivity or forum features. Hopefully it will be one of the least active threads on the Comlink  8)

I notice a few times where I come to the site and the page doesn’t load (especially in the afternoon).  It has always resolves itself after about a minute or two, but I can see where folks might find it a bit annoying.

I checked with my provider and it appears to be a load issue on the server.  They suggest I purchase their dedicated server service (of course they do, right?) – for only ‘way more $$$ than I can shake a stick at’.

I’m thinking I’ll have this issue no matter where I go, and I actually like the provider so far for other reasons – but do folks have any recommendations for other providers?  Just curious more than anything right now though…

SHEESH!!!  Finally back online after four days being down  :P

Sorry about that folks - the server rebuild they did in January caused a major disater when a routine upgrade was installed (I guess someone missed something...) and it didn't take - nor back out afterwards.  The entire sever had to be rebuilt from backups of the hundreds of sites (including ours) that resided on it.

Hopefully they got their act together now and we can enjoy some stability around here again.

The longer the site exists, the more spambots you'll get.

I have to delete like 40 a day on my forums because it's been around for 4 years. Even if it doesn't get much public traffic, the spambots have found it..

It looks like our anti spam membership software is working well, and as we had a real person sign up after it was installed, it doesn't seem to be blocking real folks.

As such, I have set the member registration to automatically send an activation link to anyone that signs up (without me delaying it, by having to approve it first). We'll see how this goes for a while (let me know if anyone sees a spammer inatvertantly getting in and I'll zap it ASAP)  :)

The latest posts now showing correctly what the latest post is for example On draks game i see that a new post is there but when i look at who posted and in what thread it says that i posted in the general ooc. When it was in someones OOC thread.

That's more of an issue due to the use of multiple child boards within child boards, which will greatly limit the visibility of the posts you're looking for unless you are specifically looking at the child board thread the post originated from. My section has 3 child boards with childboards (Mage ascension, Gameplay, Sidequests) which makes updates harder to spot and impossible for the stats at the bottom to detect.

Every once in a while, I get a few Sales Accounts, where the guy's Profile and Sig is nothing but a link to some Product (Solar Panels usually) and they make a subtle post to try sneaking it in.

This particular guy from India has been doing it off and on for years. He's subtle enough about it though, that I haven't bothered to ban the IP address. Beside, its Solar Panels, not Viagra, so ...

Sorry for the Down Time Folks!

Our Service Provider had some issues renewing my Domain Names on time, and allowed 2 of them (including BHB) to expire on me.

Fortunately they were able to manually renew them for me (before they were pounced on by others)!

Ever since the server issues the other day, the site has been slow/sluggish like it is bogged down. But today has been the worst yet.

Took 5 minutes to log in and each thread is taking 30 seconds minimum to load. MN took over 2 minutes to open the OOC.

There is a chance its my connection, but this is the only site I've had issues with

In an unrelated event to the Domain Name Expiring, my service providers had a server crash yesterday and had to rebuild it. It's been a rough week for them I guess.

Hopefully it will clear up for you soon. Weird thing is that I'm right on the border of Ohio and haven't had any problems like you have.

Window and post loading takes significantly longer since the update, I used to click post or click a link and 9 times out of 10 it would be loaded in under 2 seconds, now it often sits for several seconds before anything happens, occasionally times out. Its not my net cos I have other tabs open (I ALWAYS have several tabs running) and tey all run normally.

Your Profile defaults to the 'Save Copy to Outbox' box being checked. If you uncheck it, then simply user error.

If it is not checked to begin with, then you may have de-selected it in your Profile (just go in and turn it back on again).

It should depend on the context. (Though I didn't see the post in question.)

I don't foresee any real change in the Moderation level here on BHB - at least Moderator initiated. A few posts removed here-or-there, once in a great while, does not an Iron Handed Regime make.

The slowdown issue has been traced to the database connection itself. If it is not resolved soon, I will try some cleanup here on BHB Wednesday-ish, which will mean putting BHB into Maintenance mode for an hour or two.

If I do, I'll likely try it early morning.

Minor glitch, don't know if I've missed any incoming messages because of it or not.

My messages keeps saying I have 1 message, but when I go to read it, there's no new reply.

Haven't got any incoming messages since the bug occurred, though the people I've sent messages to since have been online. So either everyone hates me or the bug is messing with it.

Yeah, that happened to me once during this current issue. All it takes is a new PM to reset that phantom number. I'll PM you to fix it.

So, BHB works fine for me at home and (currently) in a cafe... and times out every time when I'm at work. Are there still unresolved issues, or is this on my side somehow?

I think we may be dealing with a United States wide internet problem that is being resolved slowly by the various ISPs.

BHB has been back to normal (for me anyway) since early yesterday, hopefully it keeps getting better for everyone.

If you still have problems at work in a day or so, let me know.

Part of our recent problem with BHB, turns out to be that we went and exceeded out database size limitation. As such, I had to purge the site of quite a bit to get things back to under 90% of the limitation.

Hopefully, this will mitigate the recent slowness issues, but I will be continuing to monitor that situation.

I am weighing the pros and cons of moving to another host provider, but really want to avoid that for as long as possible.

In the meantime, I will need everyone to actually prune their Private Messages - or eventually, I will be forced to flush them as well (but in that case, I won't know what to keep or remove), so best everyone takes responsibility for that themselves.

Well, that's several thousand PMs gone!

EDIT: Woah, my posts (and yours!) dropped quite a bit too, what exactly did you delete?

Also changed the User's Online from showing past 12 hours to showing only past hour. It removes a lot of overhead from the forum that way.

Yes, that was one of the first things to go, due to its size.

Have email notifications for new posts in threads you've posted in been disabled? I haven't gotten an email in a while.

Not that I am aware of. If you are having problems, it might be worth trying to turn notifications off in your profile, save, then go back in and turn them back on and re-save.

There has been some issues today at the host provider level. Hopefully it will be resolved soon, but it has kept me out most of the day.  :(

Ooh, that rotten PhotoBucket!  >:(

They are cutting off all free 3rd party hosting and demanding $40 / month for your pic links to continue working. This means over a decade of my web postings will now have stupid red X's where pics should be. This includes legendary forum posts such as the Great CYS Mustache War and a bunch of our games, both here and on CYS.

I'll be moving some of my pics over to BHB for hosting, so I can go around repairing the most grievous damage.

A pox on PhotoBucket I say!

Darn, our Database has ballooned to 105% again.

I'll have to purge it somehow... Maybe remove all PMs from old members who haven't been on in years?
Title: Re: Problem Reporting Thread
Post by: BerkaZerka on October 27, 2018, 10:43:08 am
Well, a little pruning of old members who never posted brought us back down to 85% - so, YEAH TEAM! GO US!  ;D

Man that feels really excessive, considering everything you've already pruned. Has the database also been shrinking or what?
