Title: Origins and GenCon 2011
Post by: BerkaZerka on October 19, 2010, 02:31:46 pm
Wow!  Origins may just have their ducks in a row this year - they are already accepting event submissions.  Looks like I'll have to decide what I'm going to be doing in 2011 - Probably going to run BHB, i20 Fantasy, i20 Horror/Humor, and possibly a QAGS event or two...

Can't wait all ready  ;D

Here's my submitted Origins Schedule for 2011  ;D

2011 Origins Schedule (June 22-26, 2011)

Heart Of The Oni Wednesday 6-11pm
College Students are sucked back in time to face a powerful demon that threatens Feudal Japan and holds the key to returning them to their own time. Come play i20 Fantasy with the Creator of the Bounty Head Bebop RPG. PCs (http://www.bountyheadbebop.com/forum/index.php?topic=295.0)

Nazi Sasquatch Death Squad! Thursday 8-12am
Nazis in America at the height of WWII? Robbing Fort Knox with a Sasquatch Death Squad? Not if the Bureau of Unordinary Gentlemen have anything to say about it! (QAGS) PCs (http://www.bountyheadbebop.com/forum/index.php?topic=299.0)

Hive Of Scum And Villainy Thursday 1-5pm
Welcome to Ceres; a hive of scum and villainy. Just the place for a wanabe crew of space pirates to test its metal and make a name for itself. There’s plenty of fat ships out there for the taking - if you can survive the competition.  Come play Bounty Head Bebop with its Creator.

Deadlands/i20: Dude, Where’s My Train? Thursday 6-11pm
You’ve heard tale of some great train robberies, but since when do they take the whole train?!? Weird West Steampunk Adventure Ala Deadlands Style. Come play i20 Horror with the Creator of the Bounty Head Bebop RPG. PCs (http://www.bountyheadbebop.com/forum/index.php?topic=298.0)

Penguins of Madagascar Mythos Madness Friday 1-5pm
Lions and tigers and tentacles, oh my!  Something stirs in New York’s Central Park; its smoky tendrils of evil even now seeping into the adjacent Zoo – home to those covert commando penguins; Skipper, Private, Kowalski, and Rico.  Can they fight back the Mythos and save the world? Come play i20 Horror with the Creator of the Bounty Head Bebop RPG. PCs (http://www.bountyheadbebop.com/forum/index.php?topic=238.0)

Bane Treasure Of The Vampire King Friday 6-11pm

Small Fry Saturday 5-10pm
The job was supposed to be a piece of cake - 'like shootin fish in a barrel' they said. But things never work out so easy, right? The crew will need to stay extra frosty on this one or risk losing more than the bounty to their rivals.  Come play Bounty Head Bebop with its Creator.

Can't wait  ;D

C'mon January. I want to make sure and reserve our room and games. I am excited already. It seems like on one hand it takes forever to come around and on the other it is right around the corner. I never played half of BZ's games he is running this time. I want to try the Quags one :)

We will be there too. One does not live until they go to GEN CON!  DUH!!!! ;)

I like Origins too though. It is closer to our home and it is not as much mass confusion. The one thing that comes to mind is there are no trains running through your hotel as you try to play a game. ;D

I'm assuming that's the same Penguins as last year...   or are you doing a different one?  Hoping to get into another one of your game this year but it looks like I may be running more so will not have as much time.

Yeah, my GM plate is filling up again despite my best efforts, so I'm not sure how much free time I'll have. I'll try to keep a slot or two free to join you rog a game.

Damn me for being both a soft touch and addicted to con GM'ing.  ;D

Yeah, same one (unfortunately for those who have already played it) :)

But I do reserve Sundays for pickup games - I have a pretty funny Call of PikaChulu (pokemon/cthulhu) adventure I'd be willing to run if requested...

I have come to realize at these conventions that I am a commodity to have. Gaming wives are hard to come by apparently. I have had a guy come up to me and say he was jealous of my BZ because he has a wife that plays. His wife is not real fond of gaming I take it. I do enjoy the adventures and also the chaos. It is a good time. ;D You do meet some interesting folks; some you keep as friends others are great for people watching stories later ;)

Well, unfortunately the couple that I got my free ride to Origins and Gencon from are retiring. They used to run the BEADDazzled booth, but Helene has had some major surgery since last summer and they decided they just can't handle the cons anymore. They are in their late 60's, so I understand fully and was quite thankful of the numerous years I did get to go thanks to them.

Oh well. It was fun while it lasted!

:(

I will still make it to one or the other of the Cons this year, but not likely both.

This year will likely be GenCon. Starting to save my pennies now..

All told, giving you a lift to Gencon would only be about an hour out of our way - the real logistical question would be how you would manage at the con, as Lady Z and I don't stay in the city (we can get you there on Wednesday and home on Sunday, but no promisses in-between :) )

We would love to help if we can though. :) The more at the con's the merrier. We do however have a tradition that we get Korean food on Sunday on the way home( which you are welcome to join us as well). Best food ever made. I cant wait to sign up for games and stuff. That is the fun part.It seems real then not just a vision in the future.

I generally try to team up for housing at GenCon, spreading the cost of the room. I don't know the specifics for housing this year; I will try to snag a room myself this year instead of waiting to hook up with someone later.

If I do get a room, I'll be looking for roommates. You'd be certainly included, Bill, if you wish.

Nestor, that sounds like a beautiful idea! Dave and I would certainly be up for that. I will talk to him today and get back with you.

BZ&LZ: thank you for the offer! Driving isn't really an issue; I don't mind it. Where is this Korean place? is it in-town or closer to your homeward trek?

I will see if Dave can handle Korean BBQ. :)

Nestor: talked to Dave and he's in too! You've got two roommates, mang!

And I've got two other local guys who're toying with the idea of attending this year, so assuming we all go together on this, this should get interesting. :)

I'll keep you informed on things as they progress. The trick will be jumping in when housing registration starts and snagging a room; they tend to run out in hours!

Some preliminary details: I usually arrive on Wednesday and leave on Monday. You're not required to stay the whole time; I prorate people's shares of the room based on nights stayed. In previous years the room rate has been between $1000 to $1500 for the five nights, so depending on length of stay, five people means we won't have to pay more than $300 for the room each.

I generally go for the Embassy Suites if I can; they have a free breakfast buffet that rocks. Their suites have a separate "living" room and bedroom with a King-size bed and sofa-bed, so that's four people taken care of. I own a remarkably comfortable inflatable bed that I usually bring to supplement bed space, so we should be fine.

Tekkoshocon

I will be running my Call of PikaChulu and Small Fry Adventures at Tekkoshocon in Pittsburgh PA - April 1st & 2nd (Friday and Saturday).  Tekkoshocon is an Anime convention, with a very small RPG section, but I thought it might be nice to try to get something going there.  Who knows, maybe we can grow it into a full RPG support convention some day  :)

We returned from Tekkoshocon. I will have some pictures to follow soon. We had some pretty good success with our BHB games and even the Zombie card game a comment was:

"Everything about this game is bitchin' sir" so I will take that as they enjoyed themselves :)

Looking forward to Origins though. That is a familiar site to us and we are getting to know folks there and Gen Con as well. Although the convention we just left had some familiar faces. We ran into folks that play with us at the other con's. Pretty cool.

BHB T-Shirt Give Aways -

Here's what we have for the give away T-Shirts for each one of our events (including the QAGS game) at both conventions this year.  Anyone who plays in a BHB Merc Squad run event (there are 7 for each con this year) will get a free novalty dice and a chance to win a T-Shirt (by table vote for the best player).

Front will be the BHB Merc Squad Logo - (with 2011 and Origins and GenCon specific)

I remembered to log in and submit my Wish List about 1:20. Pretty much my top 10 were all sold out.  >:(

I signed up for what I could get. It's one of my pet peeves about GenCon. There're, like, three systems I'd love to actually get to play in, but they're always filled up before I can jump in. I was hoping the Wish List system would help this year but, oh well.

Yeah, I can see where it actually made it worse for everyone by giving the fastest guys everything they wanted all at once - where before, you could have snuck in and snagged a game or two yourself while the fast guy was still busy picking through his event list.  In this case faster is not necessarily better  :P ...

Is "The Substitute" the M&M game? If so, I burn with jealousy.

I have not been able to play in a M&M game at a con since I was in one of the first demos run by Steve Kenson. Every year I try and every year the damn games fill up in seconds.

It's enough to drive a man mad. Mad, I say! *shakes fist at the sky*

Why yes, yes it is  ;D

Funny thing is it wasn't even our first choice for that timeslot (though it is one that we did write down as an option).  One of the reasons I started running madcap adventures at the cons, was because it is usually the only way I can get in on one  ;)

Lady Z and I are going to both cons this year - we usually try to get a pickup game (RPG, board, or cards) with folks we know on Sunday afternoons before we head home - you're welcome to join us if you can - I have a Zombie Apocalypse Survival Card Game - Cthulopoly - and of course the BHB adventures I'll be running at the con  ;D

Check out our Con Pics here so you'll recognize us  - http://www.bountyheadbebop.com/forum/index.php?topic=288.0 (http://www.bountyheadbebop.com/forum/index.php?topic=288.0)

Hey azhrei331! Dave (SantosCaine) and I are signed up for one of your Pantheon Games at Gencon!

Unfortunately, all of BZs games were taken. He's too popular.

BZ, Dave and I have an early game on Sunday morning. Could we have our Sunday chilling-out game after lunch? I would love to try out this card game you've been working on, or another game of BHB. Whatever you are in the mood for!

Sweet!  Lady Z and I really enjoyed playing Pantheon with Jay and the group as it was in development.  Matter of fact - Jay still owes Lady Z and I (and the group) a game or two of it to finish off the mini-campaign we started with it   8)

Hi all, here’s the rundown and highlights of our Origin events –

On Wednesday we ran Heart of the Oni and had seven folks show up to play (a good start for sure) – unfortunately, this particular adventure is six character specific and I had to turn the extra seat away.  The adventure went well with a cool group of folks, including one who actually changed from a wizard robe costume to Japanese costume following act one of the adventure – when his college student PC changed into a Zen Archer.

Thursday morning was Nazi Sasquatch Death Squad.  We ran it for seven players.  This was a funny group who came up with an awesome acronym for the Bureau of Unordinary Gentlemen (the government agency the characters work for) – B.U.G.  There were lots of laughs with this group.

Thursday afternoon we had to wait for a table to play Hive of Scum and Villainy.  I sat with two other GMs (also waiting for a table) and we hailed folks looking for our games and joked about how we were going to run three different games at one table.  Apparently, some non-Origins Mooks STOLE eight tables from that room for their own event - the dirty rotten bastards!  Anyway – we did get a table and ran our event (starting thirty minutes late) for seven players.  This was a more tactically minded group – except for one player who’s character (in his own words) was a “anatomically exaggerated female”.  It was funny seeing this character and the captain of the ship constantly fighting over the setting of the air conditioning of the ship – the captain trying to save money by setting it too low and the character trying to stay cool enough by cranking it way up.  In the end, the character got one over on the captain by hacking into the ship’s computer and overriding the captain’s control of the system…

Thursday evening was Deadlands/BHB: Dude Where’s my train.  I was worried about this one, as I sold no tickets online (outside of Lady Z’s) – though in the case of GenCon it sold out the first day.  By this time I was actually looking forward to having to cancel the game, due to Con fatigue and was in the process of packing up to leave (five minutes after the game was to start with no players showing) – when four ticket holders show up.  So including Lady Z – I suddenly had five players.  I re-unpacked my stuff and we ran the game.  It was a fun group where at one point Lady Z’s Hexslinger character actually managed to reflect an enemy Hexslinger’s fireball back onto him – ouch!

Friday Morning Lady Z and I played the Rogue Cthulhu game Come Hell or High Water.  It was pretty good and we not only survived, but managed to save the victim, and not cast some sort of anti-summoning spell to force the creature back from where it came.

Friday afternoon, Lady Z played the Rogue Cthulhu game Clue of Cthulhu, while I ran Penguins of Madagascar Mythos Madness.  This was a fun group of four tactically minded players, who ran through the adventure so efficiently that we finished forty five minutes early.

Friday evening I ran Bane Treasure of The Vampire King for a group of six.  These were the funniest and most rowdy players I have ever met.  Thank goodness there wasn’t serious gamer type among them or there would have been problems.  What was supposed to be a dark and brooding Conan game quickly turned into a mix of Monty Python and the Rocky Horror Picture show.  It was a total blast but absolutely not the game I had set out for.  Most memorable quote of the game: “It’s not gay if a woman eventually shows up”…

Saturday Morning Lady Z and I had a medical emergency that caused us to miss our MnM game The Substitute and our Saturday afternoon game Sleeping Beauty.

Saturday Evening I ran Small Fry for a group of four tactically minded players who had all played BHB before.  That’s the first time I didn’t have to go over the rules for a con game.

Anyway – that’s the basic rundown.  Lady Z and I look forward to playing again at GenCon!

It is always my fault we miss stuff. Without getting into too much detail, I take medicine on a daily basis and with all of the confusion, lets just say, I took my Ambien( sleeping pill) instead of my Aygestin (hormone pill), which are in identical bottles by the way and both start with A... All of the warnings are even identical colors. I was trying to fight off a pill at 10:00 am instaed of 10:PM. Try to not sleep when you took a pill that is made for you to do so :) I took the wrong one. I have done this once before and now shame on me. I need a medicine case with all of my daily pills in an organized manner so this sort of thing does not happen again. I missed two really cool games because of it :( I would have snored through them both and made someone feel bad.

On a better note, the games we played were a blast. We are known to play QAGS with Ian and Todd, I think we could call them friends now.... we have history. We have been trying to get them to play one of our games and it finally happened. Todd Evangalista got into a game with us. He even won the voted best tee shirt prize. He was the character who fought to have the air conditioning and won :)

The Deadlands game was really fun for me because I love to play a hexslinger and I almost got a taste of my own medicine. There were other hexslingers fighting against me, I happened to get the better hand.... This time. :)

The Nazi Sasquatch Death Squad game had this guy who played Turban was hysterical. He put sticks and leaves in his turban and called it "Turbanflage". I find that to be pretty funny. His character was also known because on his little wee dice counter to show where he was, he put a huge dice on top to make it look like a turban... That was funny too. You could not miss him if you tried. Fun game.

The Conan game on the other hand was interesting in a manner that almost can't be described to ears under the age of 18... lol. These guys were beyond the scope funny and truly turned the game into a mayhem fest. We laughed so hard, our stomachs hurt. One example is this; one guy had a dream about being in a raging storm on the deck of the ship...while the guy beside him kindly made it real by splashing water in his face from his drinking cup. :) This would be the same guy who for five hours did not attack a single soul until the final combat .... he was too busy doing other things. You would have had to been there to appreciate the whole scenario. :) They were a fun crew.

I played Clue of Cthulhu, which turned out to be like Charlie's angels because the girls went against the man and pretty much took over. I am a girl so it was fun. The adventure was well written and a lot of role playing was done. The girl who ran it did a fantastic job. It was not BHB but I have to let others play too....:) I cant always take a spot at the BHB table. :)

Anyways, looking forward to Gen Con and seeing everyone we missed at this one. It was nice to meet Mark though. :)

I go to Origins every year and I always try to play in at least one of JP’s BHB games, 2011 was no different.

During the Thursday game I played“Hive of Scum and Villainy" the best role player was the anatomically exaggerated woman who’s hacker code name was “Trash 80” who was more concerned with the setting of the air conditioning on the ship than the pirates that where attacking us. It was a fun game overall with great ship deck plans, lots of character interaction, roleplaying, interesting characters and a well planned scenario.

Too bad we had to shoot the albino tigers, the whip wielding dominatrix, and sell most of the orphans we ‘rescued’ to the Junker Clan…well it’s good the be a pirate…Ahoy space cowboys  8)

Also at Origins 2011, On Saturday evening I played “Small Fry”. All the players cooperated so well it was like we where playing Delta Force shooter who have worked together for years. Also a well thought out and fun game.

I wonder if the Mars AAA ever showed up to help those corporate goons with their car, which we shot full of holes! Also don’t worry we’ll have our revenge on that glory hound Cold Rock Johnston…LOL

Hive of Scum and Villainy would work - I'm interested in hearing what Bill and Dave think (and I'll bet they'd opt for this one too).

If we can get together for a Sunday morning game (8AM - 11:45pm) that would be cool, If we have to wait till after 2:00PM, them it will be rough on Lady Z and I to play a full four hour game (but there are still other options)  :)

But yes, IPR sells BHB and will be at the GPA booth this year.  Cubicle 7 has also started selling BHB, but I'm not sure if they have their hard copies yet (gosh I hope so).  IPR has been known not to carry enough copies of BHB for the whole week, so if you stop there do it sooner than later - or track me down at a table if all else fails - I'd love to meet ya  ;D

Well, in a nutshell, our GenCon Trip was a great success.  All our events went off without a hitch.  We were so busy though, that we were unable to meet a lot of folks we planned to and only spent a moment to say hi to a small few we were able to catch.  Got to do lunch on Sunday with Nestor, but our Sunday game plans never materialized.

There's always next year though! And Nester remarked about actually running us a Hex event, so we may have to keep on him about it  ;D

The most unusual thing of note about the con this year was all the dive-bomber gnats in the Crown Plaza - they drove us nuts at our games all con and I even had one fly down my throat as I was walking down the hall.  It got so bad that we were giving out extra Luck Points to players who managed to swat one during the games  :P

Anyway, I look forward to doing it all again next year  ;D

I want to give a shout out to Nestor for letting us room with him- It was nice of him to do so and we got to meet some pretty cool fellow gamers out of it. All in all it was a great con. This one will be my last for quite a while, though- the kids are older and we're going to be doing family vacations from here on out. Can't afford that and a con-trip, too, unfortunately. But this was a great con to last us for awhile. Again, sorry we missed you all, but hey...we'll always have forums...

Fortunately, next year I'll (hopefully) only have one kid in college, and the school's less than an hour away, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

And I swear, next year I'll play more and run less. Really. No fooling...  ::)  ;)
