Whoa wtf. We haven't made any changes since the last update. I've been at work / with friends all day and haven't checked it. I'll Facebook message Alex now.

Haven't talked to him in a couple weeks. Hopefully he's not still in the UK :/

I just thought, BZ's scripting would count as words in the search so those thousands of "words" of scripting he had to copy and paste onto each page might be why it is such a rediculous number...

Not if he wrote the scripting in a scripting window.

Yeah, End's Eternal (his longest) is roughly 700,000 words, I think.

Won't be that big but I do wanna see how long my ones are

Apocalypse Yesterday: 110470
Rising Flames: 38042

My longest story is in the 50000 word ballpark so I consider both of those quite long.

Berka's is just... it doesn't even make sense how long it is. Like that's so crazy. That's the length of the entire Harry Potter series and he wrote it in like a year... AND SCRIPTED THE DAMN THING. It's just insane.

Vodka! It tastes the least worst going down and can be downed in absurd amounts with relative ease.

Gin is second.

Non-spiced rum is third, spiced rum is down with whiskey.

Fark all forms of whiskey. On top of tasting like shit it makes me aggressive.

This is for hard liquors, which I drink predominantly because being 200 pounds and heavily muscled (Aman can attest to my physical state if my pic isn't enough) makes getting shitfaced drunk really hard sometimes. Last time it took me a full bottle over the course of 5 hours and I didn't even lose any memories or anything!

If I have to drink sociably, peach shnapps almost manages to hide the vile taste of alcohol.

I hate beer, but that's mostly because I hate all carbonated beverages. I would actually prefer "flat" beer.

This is the most classic early university / late highschool drinking preference list ever. I couldn't parody my highschool preferences any better than this. Except for the flat beer part, that was Farked.

I'm using a regular computer, it just doesn't have Zip openers and I'm borrowing it for writing and schoolwork, so I don't want to download things on it simply because that's not something you just do on a guy's computer.

I am dubious about this "computer".

Depends, it's all about if the employer believes they need a PhD level employee. They don't want to pay a PhD more to do a job a Masters would do for less (The cynicism is real).

Definitely true. I totally mis-spoke. There's a TON of data science jobs, even for skilled people with no education at all, because companies are desperate. I was speaking more about the really exciting ones like Brain, Deepmind, OpenAI and Facebook. Even Facebook Data Science INTERNS have PhDs now (I looked into trying to do a partially software partially data science internship but they said no).

Obviously my spelling is my most attractive feature Thank you, and a double degree is nothing to scoff at either!

PhD's aren't always as good as advertised, a engineer is often better off with a Masters instead (Unless they're interested in research, that is).

Engineers are weird. In most fields, a PhD is definitely more attractive. Especially if you want to do data science right now.

Agreed that it's fun and the west coast is pretty hot job wise right now. Since you've got internships you're pretty much golden as well, so it's not a bad call at all.

Yeah, my first will be in Vancouver, and my second will be in California, and then after that, I'll finally finish school. I'll be turning 26 when I finally graduate... that's technically enough time to have gotten a PhD :/

Ah, cool. Is your plan to use both degrees once graduated then, or has your focus just sort of shifted as time went on?

It would be cool to work for a medical startup at some point, but I want to get super good first and I'm not sure it will ever happen. Mostly, I just realized that I'd probably be a below average med student and average-ish doctor and I could be relatively better in computer science... and it's super fun. I never wanted to do research or grad-school so there weren't any other career options in bio.

Lazy bastard!

I thought you were going for biology and physics (I think) and that comp science was an extra thing you were doing on the side?

I graduated with a degree in Biology and I'm doing a second (abbreviated) bachelor's in computer science now. It's a cool program, 20 months + any internships you get and you get a full bachelor's degree, but you can't enroll unless you already have one.

The program has been excellent and I've managed to snag some pretty plum internships largely because the teaching has been super exceptional.

I'm an electrical engineering student, thank you.

Just one beautiful feature of python: variables are not declared any particular type  :D

Yes, but it's still good practice to use them consistently unless you have a really good reason to not. Especially because boolean resolution will resolve the first case to True.

btw Python is the best. I wish I could use it all of the time.

This is some strange cross between pseudocode and python and it's making me sad and happy accordingly.

It's nice that on CYS the stories that need to be removed always helpfully make that obvious within the first five seconds.

I know Endmaster doesn't really read very many, I remember he once said that he reads his own stories more  than any others on the site. Can't say I really blame him lol.

I always really appreciated that Endmaster would always be one of the first to leave comments on my stories, back when I actually wrote stuff.

Since we are giving our opinions on Moderators, I'd like to say that even though I think 3J is a cool dude, I don't think he's been cys' best mod. Always thought Seth and BZ did the best, and most consistent moderation on the site. Sometimes it seems that 3J does an action without consulting other mods or acts as a final arbriter, while moderators should be mostly equal (with admins being on the highest level).

Not to say I disagree with the decision, but I think it could have probably been handled more effieciently.

Well, considering that you're not really privy to behind-the-scenes talk, this sounds like a very uneducated decision. I'll admit that I mostly acted alone this time, but in general, a lot of consultation dose take place. Before the 'New Site Guidelines' for instance, there was talk in mod central. What is true though, is that I don't mind playing the villain and taking the brunt of the popular ire, apparently yours included. I think that's an efficient way to run a site and it's very deliberate.

Quote
True, but the problem is that he doesnt act that way at all. He disapears wit no notice throuout the year. And then whenever he shows up, he shakes up what the other mods were doing. Which is just beyond silly. (Still lub u 3J)

Yep, disappearing is bad. However, everytime I show up again, things seem to have gone off the rails. I'm definitely partially to blame for the mess (for disappearing) but the 'shaking up' isn't 'beyond silly' because it does right the ship. A WC/racist free CYS is a better CYS.

Community Conversation / Re: Community Conversation

This has come up before, but I think an important distinction is that we always let the other side go first. I barely ever make threads and I'm always happy to talk about anything writing related or with an actual point, but I'm not exactly going to worry about making a mess on the floor when the house is built from shit to begin with or I see the ones who always like to do the most crying in there just smearing it around.

Plus there's always that tipping point where a thread starts sliding rapidly downhill, and then who cares what anyone does, it's all going to explode at the bottom either way.

Almost always. Steve calling that girl a retard or sexist is one of the occasions where someone from your "group" went first. <----- that sentence is Farking stupid and I'm actually really annoyed that you're referred to as a "group". I'd really like to kill that terminology because it's actually counterproductive to getting along. But yeah, in general, someone will say something really asinine and then Steve or Bucky or Mizal or Ivy or whomever will trounce them for it. In my opinion, that's definitely not trolling. Trolling would be looking to incite a reaction, whereas in almost all cases, people are themselves reacting. If anything, the "group" is easily trolled.

I have a few other things to say:

  • Edit: Not really worth saying.
  • Thank you very much for all of the kind words from everyone else. I really agree with the notion that the internet is a fun place and you shouldn't really be investing a ton of energy into things if it's not fun. It is really nice to hear from you guys because this past day has not been fun at all. Seriously, it means a lot. I'm not one to be baring my emotions out on a public forum (douche) but it's a big deal to me.

I think the CYS thread was deleted :(

Anyway, I'd say there's drama, but really everyone is acting so moronic I can't even consider it real drama. Malk is shitting on Kiel pretty damn hard though, so he's probably most likely to get banned at the end of all this.

Also wasnt that ivatus guy banned?

I moved it away to mod central, but when alexp put notifications in, he made it possible for people to continue posting in there, so I had to delete it. (Thanks for the reminder, Mizal).

The slowdown issue has been traced to the database connection itself. If it is not resolved soon, I will try some cleanup here on BHB Wednesday-ish, which will mean putting BHB into Maintenance mode for an hour or two.

If I do, I'll likely try it early morning.

Thanks!

If I understand you correctly, you would be looking for each Team to have its own board that only members and guests of that Team can see?

Exactly!

Quote
If so, I wouldn't need a finalization of who would be on the teams, but I would need a finalized list of teams/member-groups to create.

So, essentially, you need to know how many teams there will be, and what the names of those teams are? Right on, I'll make sure I get that to you when I have that info.

Are we to assume that similar specific historical-political events happened over the course of this world's history?
I.E. There were a lot of singular glorified and vilified world leaders coming out of WWII, there was alternate-universe weed, alien-earth-monster sex and slightly different Beatles during the Proxy War? Or did different things happen entirely? I had a bizarrely specific idea for a controversey that involves an IRL parallel to history.

I think it will have to be on a case by case basis, unfortunately, but for the most part, we can just basically assume that if it happened on Earth it probably happened here in some form. PM me if you want to ask about a specific controversy!

Hey Berka,

How inconvenient is it to make boards and set board restrictions?

Ideally, we could start getting the sub-boards out before the teams are finalized (once a team has 5 players) so that they can chat and discuss adding more players, but if we do it that way, then you'll have to be semi-frequently adding people to boards and adding new boards, up until the game starts. If that's too inconvenient, then I can try to get teams to be really finalized before having boards created. The downside is that it's a semi-difficult process to organize via PM.

Might be a good idea to throw down an OOC thread in your board 3J, so that now folks know about it, they can chat/discuss it there.  8)

I definitely will once the game starts, but I want to keep all of the chatter here or in the CYS thread until the game starts, so that I don't have an additional place to monitor. Do you think there are a number of BHB players who might be interested but haven't seen it?

Let me know when you are ready for a game board. :)

Any time you get a free moment! The way I'm envisioning this is:

A main Politician board with a sub-board for each political party. I don't yet know how many parties there will be or what their names are though, so the sub-boards will have to wait.

Cleaned up a couple sections of the rulebook and added this rule to Miscellaneous Rules:

"You can send money to any other Politician at any time in a round so long as its after the Presidential election. However, if you send money to a Politician not in your own party, it will be added as a minor controversy to your list of controversies."
