I've used Roll20 and it's quite nice, you can upload your own PNGs and maps and then overlay grids, can choose what to reveal to players, etc. There's also a /roll command in the chat for rolls if you want to have everyone see the rolls being made

Really don't like 5th edition dnd myself since it's so simplified, prefer to play pathfinder it worked well for this.

Tabletop simulator is also an option if you find the right mod for it though I think it would be really chaotic/map would be hard to organize in comparison

Link to Roll20 site: https://roll20.net/ and some attached images to show what it looks like in action, personally found it to be a really good way to play dnd online

https://pasteboard.co/GjArAYC3ZmGb.png Section with a small arena and some character sprites
https://pasteboard.co/UnUrwebp5SZB.png Asset interface (basically just upload images to here, sort them how you'd like and then layer them on top of each other in the map section)
https://pasteboard.co/Jbz7E4qC6lPk.png Character Sheets
https://pasteboard.co/4BJwV7fZD4Tl.png Full map - You can scale it quite big, as you can see here
https://pasteboard.co/sP0O1qlGuOxM.png Smaller section of same map for scale, every spot on the grid is a 5 foot length. Did not make the maps myself but ripped them from online sources and made edits accordingly

I did read the entire Overlord LN's.

Same here! A bit of a shame where the series is heading though, it's super obvious that the author has lost a lot of the enthusiasm he used to have for it.

All of these are pretty good, I'd recommend either Mother of Learning or Pith first if you're interested though. They're both the highest quality on that list and mother of learning is completed, while Pith has a very natural stopping off point. Lord of the Mysteries is also good but it's translated so unless you're used to that kind of writing it might be off-putting to you. Pretty good translation all things considered though.

Media & Mayhem / Re: Will save world for gold

Oh sure, a ton actually:

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/40150/pith

One of the best fics I've ever read, incomplete but the first volume is a good stopping off point, author is going to continue it but had to stop because of wrist problems that she's dealing with, she posts updates every two weeks on her progress

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/37231/a-lonely-dungeon

Sentient dungeon core born in a world where all other living creatures slaughtered each other to the point of extinction, pretty cool story and a prequel to another pretty cool story

https://www.wuxiaworld.co/Reverend-Insanity/

Doomed to forever be incomplete because it was banned by the chinese government but it's a good read while it's going, this one is in the the style of chinese cultivation novels with some very unique twists, big draw is the protagonist is just about the most amoral singularly goal focused person you'd ever see, and is very good at accomplishing those goals no matter what the cost necessary (in this case, the goal is immortality)

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/21220/mother-of-learning
Complete story, one of the most universally popular webnovels (i.e along the lines of worms in terms of how much people in the community praise it - though I personally didn't like worm much), aspiring young wizard gets trapped in a month long time loop, with a twist being that the time loop is not his but another's - he was pulled in by accident and has to figure out how to move forward from there. The concept might sound basic but the quality of the writing is very much up there.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/41881/wizards-tower
Ongoing, old (150 year old) wizard decides to retire out into the wilderness after a dungeon run that gets one of his friends killed, things begin to ramp up after a while

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/40373/vigor-mortis
Young orphan girl in a world composed of flying islands rotating around a colossal god called the mist watcher discovers that her innate talent (everyone gets one, not all talents are made equal though) is for animancy (necromancy), which is very illegal in the rest of the world.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/28601/arrogant-young-master-template-a-variation-4
Love letter to cultivation novel tropes that comes into its own once you get past the start, really funny and really engrossing.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/37951/re-monarch
Another time loop story (I like time loops okay), this one with a young prince whose entire kingdom is conquered and slaughtered in a day by another person on the day of his coronation. He goes back decades in time to when he was a child only to find that the same person who killed him in the future is now coming after him in the present day as a child.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/25225/delve

This one has some pacing issues after a certain point but it's been picking back up. Guy isekaied into another world, can't speak or understand the language, world has a system that people can use to gain powers and abilities from levelling up and gaining exp (not necessarily through killing things), he engages with it in a very number heavy way, really speaks to the minmaxer in people since the author put a lot of effort into his system (more than I have ever seen anywhere else, by a huge margin).

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/30131/seaborn
Sailor in a gamelit world, guy's an old hand and loves the sea more than the land. Things go very badly for him and he ends up dead, at which point Davey Jones resurrects him and offers him a place as his lieutenant, which he accepts.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/31514/the-menocht-loop
Another time loop, but in this one the time loop is only the prologue! Protagonist starts off in a timeloop but that is only the prologue, the story continues after he breaks out of it as an overpowered and extremely dangerous individual and deals with all of the political fallout associated with it. Protagonist is also a necromancer but that is normal in this world.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/42367/12-miles-below
The world has suffered multiple apocalypses that have left the outer world a perpetually frozen, near lifeless shell. The inside is still warm enough to support life but it is also filled with murderous self-perpetuating robots manned by insane AI. The protagonist starts off as a scavenger in a surface clan that survives through the grace of orbiting satellites that remotely refill their power cells on a regular basis.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/40920/the-path-of-ascension
This one is cultivation as written by a westerner, with a lot of systems in place to explicitly subvert common cultivator tropes. There's a system in place but it's not the omniscient kind that you normally see in gamelit but rather one designed in universe by an emperor to simplify things for people. There's a bit of a holier than thou attitude in a lot of the writing that's rather annoying but otherwise it's pretty well written and it's a well thought out and logically written story.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/38292/an-unbound-soul
This is the sequel to that Lonely dungeon novel I mentionned earlier, this follows the story of Peter, a soul who is isekaied into the world after the events of Lonely Dungeon

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/40888/the-great-cores-paradox
A snake that guards a time-themed dungeon accidentally eats its own dungeon's core and gains the ability to loop back to certain checkpoints.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/43947/armor
A haunted armor type mob (i.e a sentient suit of armor) designed as a trap in a dungeon gets a sudden, inexplicable change of heart one day while playing along with a party and kills his own master, joining the party out into the world to go on adventures with them while hiding his own nature.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/20568/tree-of-aeons-an-isekai-story
Man gets isekaied along with bus full of children, only to find out he was an accidental tag along and wasn't meant to be sent over. Gods let him roll wheel to see what he gets to be in the world his soul is taken to and he gets a tree. Bad luck.

Honestly, the writing for this one starts off as absolute Farking garbage, but like, it gets better and it's super unique. As of the current chapters it's one of my favourite stories

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/43181/the-hedge-wizard
DnD themed world and story of a young wizard whose master dies and who joins up with some companions while travelling to take on dungeons. Pretty cool.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/41618/mark-of-the-fool-a-progression-fantasy
Guy lives in a country where a legendary monster resurrects itself every 100 years to terrorize the populace, but the country also has the blessing of a long ascended god that randomly chooses 5 heroes among that populace to fight back against it. The 5 heroes are given one of 5 marks, and the protagonist gets the Mark of the Fool - a Mark that gives severe penalties to the learning and execution of all combat related actions and skills, but otherwise significantly increases learning speed. He abandons his country and flees to another to pursue his dream of being a wizard, knowing that he would be useless to their efforts anyway.

https://boxnovel.com/novel/lord-of-the-mysteries-boxnovel/chapter-1/
This one's a treasure from the chinese translated stuff, one of my favourites, Zhou Ming is a guy who goes from our modern day to waking up with a gun in his hand and his brains blown out on the wall behind him in Victorian era Cthulhu universe. The characterization is great and the protagonist is one of my personal favourites. Ending is a bit sloppy but Author plans on continuing the story with a sequel.

https://boxnovel.com/novel/embers-ad-infinitum/
Another one by the same guy who wrote Lord of the Mysteries, not sure what relation it has to Lord of the Mysteries yet (if any) but it's a post apocalyptic romp following a team of employees from a high class company of genetics scientists who survived the destruction of the world world. The main plot thread follows the search for the discovery of the old world's destruction and the insane protagonist developping his abilities (which he received in exchange for his sanity).

I stopped reading it a couple dozen chapters after they got into the feywild proper, kinda lost interest around then

Tbh actually stopped reading nearly all the webcomics I followed except for a small handful, the pacing was just too glacial over too long a period of time

Picked up webnovels instead, got some real good ones too

You get the vaccine yet Forge? I heard Canada isnt doing well with the vaccine distribution

It's been handed out to medical personal and the elderly, my own grandparents just got it done today, so it's been making the rounds.

I would actually assume Forge has gotten it by now

Terrifying that it’s been a year.

Haven’t had any crazy stories. Graduated college with no graduation so that was cool 😎

Congrats!!!

My life honestly barely changed due to covid. Weekly hangouts with friends happen over Discord instead of in person now, and I work from home only going into the office when necessary (but I was doing something similar before anyway).

How's work been treating you Forge? I think I remember a post you made a while ago near the start about being super busy but I assume stuff calmed down for you at some point if you've had a lot of free time.

Hey Forge, thanks for the warning, appreciate that you cared enough to post about it.

So, if this reaches you in-between naps/work, is a CT scan really worth it if you're showing symptoms? Isn't the risk of complications from the scan more significant than the extra information you'd get over just doing an ultrasound?

While none of us really have much time or motivation for any good old forum games anymore i'll definitely always look fondly on the time we spent on them.

I'd love to play some dnd over voice chat or something, especially after the new baldur's gate game comes out and I end up being forced to learn the 5e rules XD

Though hey, if you're looking for something to read, I've been reading a lot of translated/webnovels as of late. Generally lower quality of writing (grammar/language-wise, since a lot of them are translated or have no editor) but a lot more willing to be creative with the plot or go into a lot more detail about things. Two best ones I've read so far are the following:

Lord of the Mysteries

http://novelfull.com/lord-of-the-mysteries.html

Follows the story of Zhou Mingri (though he quickly adopts and uses the name of the person whose body he inhabits, Klein, and you rarely see his name again), a chinese guy who enacts a ritual from a book on Earth that sends him into the body of a guy who shot himself in the head in the setting of Lord of the Mysteries. The setting is cthulhu/victorian era-esque, something I don't actually normally like, and which put me off from reading it for a really long time, but once I actually started I found it was extremely well executed and came with a very compelling magic system.

There are a couple infodumps early on when Klein is training with Old Neil but you can honestly skim through most of those.

It's translated from a Chinese novel, so there are some sayings that are a little weird if you're not used to them, but I found it to be a pretty high quality translation.

I'd say the series is roughly halfway done atm, it gets another 2-3 chapters every day (which will likely slow down when it catches up to the author), and i'm fairly confident in the author's plan for the story moving forward.

Mother of Learning

Follows a moody little piece of shit teenage kid going to wizard school who ends up caught in a time loop. He quickly grows out of his asshole personality and spends a very long time in the time loop. Author sucks at counting, something you'll notice very quickly when he starts actually putting down hard numbers on how much time has actually been spent in the time loop, but that's an inconsistency you can mostly ignore. The writing very quickly picks up once the time loop actually starts, though you'll have about two or three chapters before that happens.

The writing's great, the protagonist quickly becomes very likeable, the setting and the progression of the plot is well-paced IMO, and the story is nearly done, supposed to be finished this month actually. I'd strongly recommend you read this one first, if you read either or both of these series/novels, since it's nearly done and you won't have to end up waiting for any chapters.

Yeah okay i'm not liking what i'm seeing here, looked at a bunch of reviews and while i'm not thin-skinned enough to care that the story's filled with rape or creepy shit, there was a spoiler review describing the plotline here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2534423989?book_show_action=true&from_review_page=1 which is really not what I wanted to so.

Especially the fact that everyone's memory is erased at the end of the novel. That's some cop-out shit right there. Obvious and probably necessary but a cop-out nonetheless.

25
Media & Mayhem / Re: What Drak's been reading
« on: December 24, 2019, 01:17:48 pm »
I was about to say that I don't like that because the series ended on a very, very final note, but looking it up it's actually set in-between the first and second book... and it's about the Lady and Soulcatcher's 3rd sister?

"Shouldn't have given him the claymore."

She eyes Morrison up and down before continuing, "I'd say we should just kill him outright but if he's dead the JSPD might just not follow through with paying out the bounty. We should get get off-planet with him as soon as possible and publicly turn him in to a slightly less biased police force.

Butch, strip him before we get to the sub, I'll guard the entrance. See if he has any implants too, we really can't afford to be followed from here."

Reference to Chronicles of the Black Company, which Aman and I both read and absolutely loved, and which Forge probably read about in our discussion thread on it back when we were discussing books we were reading (dunno if he read it himself or not).

Highly recommended, great read. The first couple chapters are weak (it was his first book) but it picks up pretty fast.

"A Curse Upon Thy House
This affects not only a person upon whom it was cast, but his entire progeny and brood also. The caster rolls Manipulation + Intimidation (difficulty 8). One success is needed, but for every success thereafter, one other vampire is affected (beginning with the closest to the target). Each Willpower point spent likewise affects another vampire. They will all have the Dark Fate Flaw until the head of the house (the target) atones for the crime done to the curser. If the curser was an anarch, and the target was the prince, then the prince must somehow pay reparation to the anarch's memory. A "good deed" must be done to overcome the curse, or else all the brood are affected. If the target dies, then the next one who was affected by the curse takes on the responsibility of reparation."
