Cows vs. Aliens Redux?

So, I was thinking of taking another crack at my Cows vs. Aliens game on CYS.

Last I was in it, I completely scrubbed all the scripting, as it was seriously clunky - burdening CYS with thousands upon thousands of lines of code.

I want to try my hand at another approach, sort of being inspired by Killa's game. I was thinking maybe an Uno style card game, or draw poker.

Any thoughts?

Also, I was thinking of trying to handle it with JavaScript, rather than the CYS script. I was curious if that was what Killa was doing too.

Everything aside from the interface is done with CYS' scripting. Interface is html/css (though much of it is added/removed with the scripting).

That certainly sounds like a doable and cool idea. Was it BradinDvorak who was testing with javascript before? Or perhaps Ford.

Well, I've got the mechanics sorted using CYS Scripting - as I couldn't figure out an easy enough way to link JavaScript to page navigation.

I'm pretty happy with my card shuffling and drawing routine (which is a 10th the size of the one I used in the original). I also got the logic sorted out for comparing poker hands to see who has the better hand.

Working on minor issues now, like how the pages and links will all work together.

Too bad I'm already sick of playing it, due to a couple hundred passes, working through all the bugs.  :P

Ready for playtesting if you are interested. So far, I can only see one bug, where the Disco Ball is attributed a win, while showing as a King??? No idea why this happens yet, but it only happened once and I cannot recreate it due to millions of possible hand combinations.

Anyway, let me know what you think here. If the feedback is good, i'll publish it on CYS in the next few days.  :)

Quick thoughts:
- Pretty fun game.
- Really wish we weren't capped at betting 20 cows
- Felt kind of odd that you still only bet 5 per turn even when against 3 (when they bet a combined 15)
- Best hand my opponent got was 3 of a kind. Not really a point up or down, just figured I'd mention it.
- Would be nice if the pot was shown. I went through several rounds before even realizing we were auto betting 5 cows per turn.
- I liked the interface.
- Kind of want there to be a slight different between rounds besides they get more hands. It makes each round harder, but play-style was all you do differently is play more conservatively.
- Didn't find any logic errors while playing.

All in all a good game. Glad to see you decided to take another stab at it.

Yeah, I suppose we could add some higher bet values.

The way the betting works, you set the amount all hands put into the pot.

I agree, having the pot show wouldn't be too hard.

I had a difficult time trying to work out ai for the aliens trying to improve their hand, so they just draw a whole new hand when they fail to get a pair or better on the first try.

Any suggestions for making the play more interesting as it goes along?

What about having 'cheats' like you included in your Koi Koi?

Maybe give them to the aliens too?

I dunno. The game is pretty short, so I'm not sure abilities would work.

I was thinking something along the lines of random events, which get more frequent/crazy the more you bet (because higher bets get aliens excited or something lol).

Things like:
- Aliens double the current bet (for the player as well)
- Cows drop from their spaceship (player gets +X cows)
- Some cards suddenly disappear from the deck (with a theme)
- Aliens combine their hands for a turn

Things like that to spice it up a bit.

I feel like I shouldn't include any gimmicks with the first scene however, as it's very short and meant to be an intro to the game mechanics.

Also, what do you think of the current alien shared cow pool vs. each having his own?

If they had their own, then they could conceivably be knocked out, but with my weak ai, the player would wipe them up pretty fast once it got down to 1 on 1 again.

Shared cow pool is fine imo, so long as the player matches their combined bet.

Matching the combined bet is not how normal poker is played. Everyone antes the same and must meet the same bet or fold.

Granted, something like what you suggest could be incorporated, but I'm leaning against it at this point.

Normal pokers also isn't played as 3 vs 1 (or with cows, lol). Your call though.

Just need to figure out when to pop the gimmick rounds off.

Sure. Could also give it a 1 in 4 chance of going off every round, which would make it a bit less predictable (but statistically shouldn't change the frequency).

Hmm... Just spotted a small bug, where the Inflatable Cows page comes up on Call - when it should actually come up off Deal The Next Hand.

In other words, it's 1 page early.

I'll fix it, but I can't get to it till this evening.
