Madame is behind Mr. Tully. She is holding the lopan just in case. She is having a fun time( under the circumstances). She may be old, but she can still blow stuff up like the best of em'. She waits for Tully to decide which way to continue on.

Does she sense any danger as of yet? Huh

Aurora whispers to Madame, "Nice job." She keeps her gun at the ready and descends into the tunnel with an uncertainty growing in her gut about being confined to some Mountain Man tomb. "So they know we're here," she comments to herself.

Madame Z is looking for loot. She carries the lopan and waits for any kind of signals it may bring. She follows Tully and is wondering how far away these animals may be. She pulls out her shptgun as well. ( Just in case!)

" Tully, what do you see ahead?"

Aurora keeps scanning behind and listening for anything, particularly animal in nature. She's never had to shoot a dog before and is trying to avoid memories of her childhood with her dog, Mitzy. She mentally brings up the image of the target and the deal for the bounty.

Ambush Resolution

Cooperative Hide roll vs. Individual Spot rolls: Mastiff Poodles TN 10: rolls a 11 (failure) vs. Tully TN 10 (includes a +2 bonus due to advanced warning): rolls a 10 (Crit); Madame Z TN 13 (includes a +2 bonus due to advanced warning): rolls a 12 (extra success); Aurora TN 9 (includes a +2 bonus due to advanced warning): rolls a 7 (success)

As the crew moved up the east tunnel, Madame Z’s lopan suddenly showed ‘bad fung-shui'.  A sudden tensing up for the unseen danger was enough to warn Tully and Aurora, both of whom didn’t exactly expect  warm reception at the end of the tunnel anyway.  No-one was surprised when two large mastiffs leaped from a five foot high ledge up ahead to attack.  What was surprising however, was that the beasts where mastiff poodles – large white, with short cully hair – though certainly not bobbed or cut into ridiculous poofs.  That, and the dogs didn’t bark or growl.  They had obviously been trained to hunt and guard with a sense of stealth.

Initiative roll: Tully TN 12: rolls a 3 (success); Madame Z TN 12: rolls a 18 (failure); Aurora TN 12: rolls a 15 (failure); Mastiff Poodles TN 9: rolls a 14 (failure)
[OOC – For the first Round, everyone only gets on Action (Attack; Move; Defend; or Misc).  On the second and consecutive Rounds, everyone will get two Actions.  Below is the order that folks will act.  Please post Combat Intentions for the Round and I will then post the actual results…]

Wave One:
Tully 3

Wave Two:
Madame Z 18
Aurora 15
Mastiff Poodles 14

For the First Round, it is clear that the Mastiff Poodles intend to bite or pull down Tully (or whoever is closest at the end of the Round).

Madame Z realizes that these pooches are not cute and cuddly like her little Bonzii. The lopan tells her that there is danger and she always listens. Madame Z will make sure her faithful shotgun is loaded and have it ready to shoot a dog if necessary.

Tully pulls back as the welcoming reception makes it appearance.

His arm is steady as he aims at the closest pooch. "Down, boy," he grumbles as he fires.

OOC: Standard ranged attack. Nothing fancy

Would Aurora's martial arts training be effective in subduing the beasts?

Would she have the ability to tumble past them to shoot or knock them out quickly from behind or engage their handler if we can assume he is nearby?

Would having a dog whistle be at all appropriate and do we have one?  ;-)

If it looks like Tully is going to shoot them all down before she can do anything useful she will have to let it happen. However, if Aurora can act quickly enough she will summon the mask of Dawn Feng and go for tumbling past the terrible poodles and push herself with a surge to try to take them out before they eat Tully or he fills them full of lead. He still owes her a nice meal I believe.  ;-)

Ranged roll: Tully TN 11: rolls a 15 (failure)
Luck Point Spent: Tully spends a Luck Point for a +4 Bonus to TN; This changes the 15 (failure) to a 15 (crit)
[OOC – the shot does 17L (12L + X-Roll of 5 = 17L), which will go directly to Wound Points (due to most advantageous crit option given the situation), dropping the Mastiff’s Wound Points from 8 to below 0 – killing it instantly]

As the lead mastiff leapt for Tully’s throat, Tully’s longarm came up to meet it.  There was a loud bang that echoed loudly off the tunnel walls and a wet spray – as the blast went up through the beast’s jaw and blew the contents of its head up into the ceiling.    The dog slumped limply at the ex-mountain man’s feet.

Ranged roll: Madame Z TN 7 (due to thumper rounds vs. shot): rolls a 17 (failure)

Madame Z reacted next, leveling her riot gun at the other animal.  Another loud bang rang out, leaving a ringing in the ears and a lot of smoke in the tunnel.  Madame Z had loaded the non-lethal thumper rounds from the ship’s stores into her weapon – but she’d have to hit first to make them effective.  Her shot was wide to the right and slapped harmlessly against the wall of the rise at the end of the tunnel.

Tumble roll: Aurora TN 9: rolls a 7 (success)
Surge Point Spent: Aurora spends a Surge Point for an Extra Action
Unarmed roll: Aurora TN 14: rolls a 9 (success)
[OOC – the attack does 12S (3S + X-Roll of 9 = 12S), dropping the Mastiff’s Vitality Points from 22 to 10]

Aurora then tumbled past Madame Z and Tully, somersaulting over the remaining mastiff in fact, and landing behind it after placing a boot to its head on the way over.  She had hit it hard – with enough force to break boards had it been a martial arts competition – but the beast just yelped loudly as its thick skull absorbed most of the blow.  Still, Aurora could see it was dazed somewhat by the hit – perhaps another like it would be enough to put it down without having to kill it…

Unarmed roll: Mastiff TN 12: rolls a 5 (success)
[OOC – the bite does 7L (2L + X-Roll of 5 = 7L), dropping the Tully’s Vitality Points from 26 to 19]

The mastiff meanwhile, laid his teeth into Tully’s leg, just below his right knee.  In spite of his thick clothing, the beast got through, tearing up the skin over his shin.  While it certainly didn’t feel good, Tully knew the wound wasn’t (by itself) life threatening.  He’d be all right, as long as he didn’t take too much damage like that.

[OOC – Everyone now has Two Action to use each Round.  Please post combat intentions for Round Two]

Aurora moves to clean up the mess with the dogs and help Tully out of his jam, hopefully not missing any handlers who may be lurking in the area.

OOC: If I read the initiative order right, Tully'll be moving after everyone else, including the dogs.

Assuming the pooch's still chewing on his leg by the time his action rolls along, Tully will jack the next round into the Mare's Leg singlehandedly (in true Rifleman fashion), jab the barrel into the dog (hopefully getting some sort of point-blank bonus) and blowing the critter off.

If that doesn't do the trick, it'll be lather, rinse, repeat for his second action.

If he's canine-free and has an action available, Tully will do some first-aid (essentially wrapping his leg to put pressure on the bite) before continuing on after the bounty.

OOC: OK, here's putting my newbie player hat on. I thought that once the first turn was done, all characters got to act in both waves, in initiative order, thus getting their two actions. Hence, my impression stated above.

Quote from: BHB, pg. 72
"When combat begins, all characters start Flat-Footed and only get one Action until after their first turn, at which point they are no longer Flat-Footed and may begin taking standard two Action rounds."

"Initiative is broken into abstract phases, called Waves, used to establish the order of actions during each round."

"Resolve the First Wave first, then the Second; highest Initiative rolls first in each Wave, starting at 20 and counting down."

So, I'm reading this as following the Initiative Order you listed for the first Turn, but after that everybody acts twice, once in the First Wave and then again in the Second, in Initiative order.

Is that incorrect? Perspiring minds want to know...

Madame Z blows the dog whislte to get its attention and under her breath says" Smile for the shotgun poochie" and will try to fire her shotgun towards the huge mass of doggie.

You mean the one currently chewing on Tully's leg? Which means Mme. Z will be firing into melee? This does not bode well... Wink
