Broader Skill List?
« on: November 15, 2010, 06:02:23 pm »

Hi all,

I was just wondering what folks thought of Broader Skill lists for games (as I was considering making an optional Skill list for BHB).

To clarify, what I mean by A Broader Skill list is one where there are less skill names, but they apply more broadly to a greater number of skills.

For example:

Stealth would be the skill that covered Conceal, Hide, & Move Silently.
Larceny for Open Locks, Sleight of Hand, and the like

So, what are folk’s preferences?

Methinks someone's been looking at Green Ronin's games... ;-)

Generally, I like the idea of streamlining the Skill List, as long as certain key disciplines aren't mooshed together just to save space (such as shoving Demolitions under Repair, or Security Systems under Technology).

Looks good.

You could also provide players with the option to have a character specialize on a part of the skill to represent a tighter focus (say, for example, a character who's and accomplished gunsmith but not an expert in demolitions).

Nah, I was actually thinking about it from what I have heard they did with D&D4e (though I haven't actually looked  ;)

I'm so totally going to lump Security Systems in with Technology - hehehe  ;D

Things to Consider –

  • Mechanics/Effects of Specialization
  • Cost of Skill Points at Character Creation
  • Cost of XP to Improve
  • Impact on Edges and Flaws

Starting Skill Points

At Character Creation, Starting Skill Points would be 25, rather than 60.  Points would be spent 1 for 1 on levels for each Skill Set.

Specialization

A Specific Skill out of a Skill Set can be chosen as a Specialization, increasing it by 2 for 1 Skill Point, in lieu of increasing the Skill Set itself as above.  (No more than 3 Skill Specializations at Character Creation, but more can be made later with XP; Max 6 Ranks for each Skill Specialization at Character Creation).

XP Costs

4 XP to Improve Skill Set by 1 (<5) (no XP Cost to gain a new Skill Set)
6 or 8 XP (haven’t decided on cost yet) to Improve Skill Set by 1 (>5)

Points purchased above can be used as in Character Creation to increase Either Skill Sets (1:1) or Specializations (1:2)

Edges/Flaws

See Below

Other Considerations

Some Skill Sets mix Attributes (ie. Wis & Pre)

PS, once I get this hashed out a bit more I was wondering if I should take the discussion to one of the RPG Forums on Broad vs. Narrow Skills - to get a better idea of what folks thing of either or.  Any suggestions on where to post - or look for previous discussion on the matter?

Right now, I'm seeing this as more of a Hybrid than a true Broader skill list.  What I mean is that I can still include all of the individual skills and thier descriptions/mechanics in the ruleset, but folks can record them on the character sheet in the Skill Sets - needing only to note specific skills or specializations or Edge/Flaw modified skills as they apply.

Does this make sense?  Comments?

Need to set aside some part of my rapdily diminishing spare time to go through the lists and do some analysis, but at first glance it looks okay.

If worse comes to worse, you can provide these as alternate rules. It looks like you could easily translate across so that modules and writeups would be usable with both sets.

Thanks for the feedback  :)

And yeah, because the die mechanics are the same, you could use character write ups from either varient interchangeably.

Here's what I finally settled on - which I'm going to give try out at Con on The Cob this year with my Velociraptor Rhapsody adventure.  I'll let ya know how it goes...  :)

Starting Skill Points
At Character Creation, Starting Skill Points would be 30, rather than 60.  Points would be spent 1 for 1 on levels for each Skill Set.

Specialization
A Specific Skill out of a Skill Set can be chosen as a Specialization, increasing it by 2 for 1 Skill Point, in lieu of increasing the Skill Set itself as above.  (No more than 4 Skill Specializations at Character Creation, but more can be made later with XP.

6 XP to Improve Skill Set by 1 (>5)

Points purchased above can be used as in Character Creation to increase Either Skill Sets (1:1) or Specializations (1:2)

Edges/Flaws

Other Considerations
Some Skill Sets mix Attributes (ie. Wis & Pre) Fixed.

OK, so I spent a day creating characters for this Option. I started them at 4 XP and then bumped them to 24 XP.  Bottom Line - I don't like what I'm seeing.  The problem is that the characters are seriously 'flattened' by dumping points into generic clusters of skills.  It becomes very difficult to have someone good at say lockpicking but not slieght of Hand and so on.  The Specialization feature is meant to allow this, but it is too limited to be of much use.  Characters come out on an across the board average, rather than really good here, average there, and terrible in one or two skills.  I'm so unimpressed by application, that I'm not even going to bother trying it out in a game.  :P

There may be something that can be done to the Option to spice it up a bit, but I'm shelving my efforts on it for now...

Had good success with this with my Escape Facility Seven Game (which focused on Super Powers) - so it still has merit - just need to find a balance with it for Character Creation and XP...

It is strange how one goes back and forth on these sort of things. Looking back at this, I'm now more inclined to just have the classic list of skills, than the compact list.

Go figure.

Look again in 2 years so you can decide it needs a total overhaul again lol

Funny you should say that - I've been thinking lately about revamping some of the more OP Edges to Limit Break style (where they can only be used after being wounded or the like).  ;D

That could make it interesting, have an ace in the hole, but only if things have begun going badly so it can't be spammed.
