My rabbit died.  He was 8.

He was a great rabbit; so friendly.

When I was on the computer, he'd come sit under my chair & thump on the ground to warn me when the cat was in the room.

Thanks everyone.  It's weird going in his room & not hearing him thumping hello.

don't know what we'll do when the cat dies.  Which realistically, could be any time now.  Although she seems okay.

Damn, dude, that sucks. Sounds like you gave him a long, long, wonderful life, though. If I only had 8 years to live from beginning to end, I'd like to be a rabbit in his position.

Wow, how long do rabbits live as pets? Eight years seems impressive. Do you plan on getting another one?

According to Wikipedia, well-cared for indoor rabbit lifespan is 7-10 years.
I think we did alright by him. He was very fluffy and big & strong.

Prolly not. He's a hard act to follow.

My beautiful Betta died.

He was the best, smartest, friendliest Betta.  He would come over when you called him & follow your hand & take food right from you.

He was fine yesterday. Seemed happy.  Tonight I went to change his water & he was dead.

Wow, that's the pits!  :'(

I lost a few of my goldfish to overfeeding/nitrite poisoning, but am getting better at keeping the water cleaner now.

Last time we went away for the weekend, we lost three, because our teen (in charge of feeding them) forgot to feed them and then gave them the entire weekend's food all at once would make up for it. She did the same with the cats. The cats lived through it, but the fish didn't fair as well.  :P

Hope you catch a break soon Seth, seems like you could use one!  :)

Who Knows? Maybe it was an old fish? Or it had a hidden ailment?

Sorry to hear about it :(

When first setting up my tank I got the usual sales guys, then one said "Look, fish die, especially farmed fish. At the start buy cheap ones cos you'll loose a few and even when you tank is fully set up and running perfectly for months and months you'll occasionally find one dead so be prepared for that"

Asked him why and he said often it is simply the fish having a disease or ailment that you had no way of knowing about and rarely anything the owner did unless it was obvious like feeding a weeks worth of food, pouring chlorinated tap water into the bowl etc.

My nephew was looking after my tank for a week while I was away at Christmas and I lost 3 of my lil guys, found out after they had helpfully 'topped' the water up from the tap and the chlorine is strong here...

Sorry to hear, Seth. Losing your pets is always shitty.

I lost my cat a few months ago, and my keyboard already feels too light.

Sorry about your cat, Malk.  Cats are terrific.

Wife's still sad about this fish, which she admits is weird, usually you don't get so attached to fish.  But this one had personality.
She says he had so much vitality, it was part of what made him special, and it doesn't seem right that he should have been one that didn't last.

I really miss having a pet, it's been almost five years since I've had a furry, scaled, or feathered friend in my home.

Well, it can be awkward having furry friends in the house if you have pets.

So back a couple years ago, last time we bought pond fish, a tiny bonus fish got into the bag. We hadn't seen him in a long time.

Then just this year, we started noticing him again.  He was solid black, so he was hard to see.

When he got about 4 inches long, he started slowly turning orange- like the black was rubbing off of him showing orange underneath.  But not orange like the red&white sarassa, goldfish orange, more like the shubunkin.  We do have one that's all orange and black, with no bluegray or white on him.

So for a while he was mostly orange with scattered black.   Then overnight, his whole body turned ghost white.  his head has a calico orange pattern on it still, but the entire rest of him is translucent/iridescent white.  (again, not like the chalkwhite of the sarassa)

TL;DR seth haz a fishy

These are outdoor fish? How big do they get? How do they fair over winter?

Yep, they live outdoors.  Once in a while my wife talks about maybe bringing them in overwinter (her cousin does with his) but if they died then, it would feel like we personally killed them.

This group is only 2-3 winters old.  A few years ago it was really cold and the pond froze over, so they all perished.  :'(
It was the second time we lost everyone due to pond freezing completely over.  Usually we have a heater that keeps an air hole open.

The most I ever had was somewhere above 20 at one point, but that was too many for the pond size I guess and not all of them made it through the winter.   We usually lose only one or two.  Also most years we lose one or two to herons, despite efforts to cover the pond with netting & such.

The biggest one I have right now is nearly 9 inches long.  This pond seems to top out at just about 12 inches.
(I've heard that in a bigger pond you can get them in the 15-18 inch range.)

Hmm, I wonder if you could install bubbler-stones in the pond and pump hot air through them during the winter... ?
