Little About The BHB System___
The BHB system uses a single twenty-sided die with Target Numbers (TN) to roll under and is essentially a percentile-based game in increments of 5%.

Target Numbers are determined by adding a Skill value to any situation modifiers that might apply and then rolling the die to see if the result falls within the TN. In some instances a Minimum Target Number (MTN) may be required, where the result of the die not only has to fall within the TN, but also has to meet or exceed the value set by the MTN.

As an additional element to each die roll, an X-Roll (or X-Damage) may be called for, which is determined by reading the one’s digit of the die when it is rolled. This allows a secondary number (1-10) to be generated simultaneously with TN resolution; meaning damage and other factors of success can be figured without a second roll. This handy little mechanic speeds play and helps move combat along at a refreshingly brisk pace.

The BHB system also uses a Luck and Surge Point dynamic that gives the characters an advantage when needed and ensures the action never gets stale. Using Luck and Surge Points, a character can push himself past the normal effects of injury, succeed at a critically important roll, or even escape certain death.

In short, BHB is its own unique system, but with a familiar feel and a cinematic flair, that captures the grittier anime genre after which it is modeled.

What Makes Up A Character___
Let’s take a quick look at what makes up a BHB character.

Abilities_
The basis of any BHB character is his or her Abilities, from which all other characteristics, traits, and attributes of the hero can be derived. In BHB, each character is assigned six Abilities (in value from one to ten) that represent their physical and mental prowess. These are:

•   Strength: Representing physical power, toughness, and muscle.
•   Agility: Representing dexterity, reflexes, and balance.
•   Constitution: Representing health, vigor, and stamina.
•   Intelligence: Representing knowledge, learning, and reason.
•   Wisdom: Representing willpower, common sense, and awareness.
•   Presence: Representing persuasiveness, leadership, and charisma.

As noted above, these Abilities will range from 1-10, with the following scale of comparison:

Physical Scores: (Strength, Agility, Constitution)
0 | STR Paralyzed; AGI Convulsive; CON Dying
1 | Child
2 | Adolescent
3 | Adult
4 | Athlete
5-6 | Olympian
7-8 | STR/CON Horse; AGI Cat or Snake
9-10 | STR/CON Elephant; AGI Octopus

Mental Scores: (Intelligence, Wisdom, Presence)
0 | Catatonic
1 | Child
2 | Adolescent
3 | Adult
4 | INT Scholar; WIS Wiseman; PRE Spokesman
5-6 | INT Professor; WIS Sage; PRE Idol
7-8 | INT Genius; WIS Seer; PRE Ruler
9-10 | Supernatural

Initiative and Movement_
Initiative and Movement is used to determine how quickly the characters can react to danger and how fast they can move on foot in any given timeframe.

Saves_
Saves (Reaction, Endurance, and Willpower) are used to help the characters avoid or resist harm.

Vitality and Wound Points_
Vitality and Wound Points are used to determine how much damage the characters can sustain before suffering the ill effects of pain, unconsciousness, or death. The loss of Vitality Points represents minor injuries such as bruising, strains, sprains, scrapes, cuts, grazes, or more serious wounds to the extremities. The loss of Wound Points are major injuries such as broken bones, heavy bleeding, horrific burns, and internal injuries.

Luck and Surge Points_
Luck and Surge Points are what make the characters the stars of the show, setting them apart from ‘Joe Average’ and the rest of the unwashed masses (See below for more info on Using Luck and Surge).

Skills_
Skills determine the character’s talents and expertise.

Edges and Flaws_
Edges and Flaws are the advantages and disadvantages that help to make each character unique.

Feng-Shui, Spells, and Other Powers_
These apply only if the character is a Feng-Shui Master, Wu-Jen, Priest, or the like; but represent unusual and sometimes even dangerous powers.

Weapons/Attacks, Armor, and Equipment_
Sometimes the equipment makes the man. While not specifically character traits themselves, the right weapons (or equipment) can certainly be an extension of the character.

Carrying Capacity_
Carrying Capacity (Normal Load, Encumbered, Limit, and Drag) determines how much weight the character can move under different levels of Encumbrance.

Experience_
Experience is gained as the game is played and is used to improve a character over time.

Using Luck and Surge_
As one of the most dynamic aspects of BHB system, Luck and Surge Points can be used to influence the outcome of the game in the following ways –

Luck
Luck Points can be spent for the following Luck Options:
  • Reduce a MTN by 4 (before or after the roll)
  • Add a +4 Bonus to the TN or Die Value (before or after the roll) – when adding to Die Value, you must be able to use the entire +4 Bonus without going over
  • Take a Faulty Success instead of rolling the die (only if rolling is an option)
  • Negate a Botch or an opponent’s Crit
  • Focused Effort (spend a Luck Point for an Extra Die to roll with any one roll)
  • Not As Bad As It Looks (take only 1/2 damage from a single attack; this Option cannot be used twice on the same attack to reduce damage to zero)
  • Lucky Break (for inspiration from the GM to help move the game along or for a plot twist in the character’s favor)
  • Escape Death (to Stabilize a Dying character and ignore further damage for the rest of the Scene)
.
Surge
Surge Points can be spent for the following Surge Options:
  • +2 STR for one round
  • +3 Damage on any 1 Attack
  • Take an Extra Action
  • Interrupt another’s Action (changes character’s Initiative Order for the combat)
  • Make back-to-back Attack or Defense Actions without the Rapid or Evasion Edges
  • Shake off Stunned Condition
  • Shake off KO’d or Unconscious Condition
  • Shake off one level of Fatigue
  • Shake off Intimidated, Shaken or Panicked Condition
  • Ignore Injury (take a Round while Disabled without going to Dying)
  • Defy Mental Control for 1 Action
  • Double Tap (Counter Escape Death Luck Option)
  • Stretch or Tweak an Edge, Amazing Feat, Spell, or Power
.
Both Luck and Surge can be spent each round as Free Actions.

Luck can be spent as many times per round as the player wants, though it is advised not to use up all your Luck in one round.

Surge can only be used once per round (except with the Heroic Surge Edge). Unlike Luck, Surge can also be used without spending Surge Points, at the cost of Fatiguing the character afterwards.

Recovering Luck And Surge
Luck and Surge Points refresh at the rate of 1 point of each per in-character day.

Character Creation Summary___
Starting Abilities_
Characters start with 20 Ability Points, which they allot between all six abilities. No ability may start below 1 or be raised above 5, though it is possible to raise an ability past 5 later, using Experience Points.

Initiative And Movement_
Initiative = (Base 5 + AGI + WIS + Modifiers)
Movement = (Base 30’ + Modifiers); Run = (Movement Score x STR); Leap = ((STR) high/(STR x5) long)

Saves_
Reflex (Base 5 + AGI + Modifiers)
Fortitude (Base 5 + CON + Modifiers)
Willpower (Base 5 + WIS + Modifiers)

Vitality And Wound Points_
Vitality Points = (Base 5 + STR + CON + WIS + Modifiers)
Wound Points = (Base 5 + CON + Modifiers)

Luck And Surge Points_
Luck Points = (Base 4)
Surge Points = (Base 4)

Starting Skills_ Skill List
Characters start by assigning Skill Levels as outlined below. Initially, no skill may be raised above level 5, though it is possible to do so later using Experience Points.

Strong Points (General Skills)
Choose Any 2 General Skills to be Your Character’s Strong Points.
•   These 2 Skills Start at Level 5.

Proficiency Skills (Any Skills)
Then choose Any 3 of Any Skills to be Your Character’s Proficiency Skills.
•   These 3 Skills Start at Level 4.

Basic Skills (Any Skills)
Then choose Any 4 of Any Skills to be Your Character’s Basic Skills.
•   These 4 Skills Start at Level 3.

Bump Points (Any Skills)
Lastly, distribute 3 Bump Points among Any Skills.
•   These can be split up or lumped in anywhere, creating new Skills at Level One or being added to existing Skill levels to max them out at Level 5.

NOTE: When assigning Skill Points, they are only applied to the Base Skills (XX) and not to the Skill Foci (+0) that follow them.

Remember ---

2 5's (General Skills only)
3 4's (Any)
4 3's (Any)
+ 3 Extra Points (to Any) (so you can start with a 5 in a Combat Skill, but it needs to be a Proficiency Skill (4) +1 Bump Point

Edges and Flaws_ Edge List & Flaw List
All characters start the game with 4 Edges. Characters do not have to start with Flaws, but doing so allows them to take up to 3 additional Edges (gaining one for each Flaw). No character can start with more than 3 Flaws and 7 Edges.

Setting Requirements___
Due to the nature of the setting, all characters must incorporate the following into their characters.

  • All Characters must be 16 - 23 Years Old (see Prolog)
  • Your Archetype will be Samurai Wu-Jen, Samurai Priest, Samurai Warrior, Samurai Scout, Samurai Zen Archer, or Samurai Brawler.
  • The Samurai Wu-Jen must take the Wu-Jen Edge, The Samurai Priest must Take the Priest Edge with Ancestor Worshiper or Emissary of The Celestial Order as his Theological Base, and the Samurai Zen Archer must take the Feng-Shui Edge (Feng-Shui or Discord)
  • Must put at least 1 Level (see Bump points above) into the Political Sciences Advanced Skill
  • Must take the Obligation (Daimyo) Flaw
  • Cannot take the Outlaw or Savage Flaws. May take the Bounty Head Flaw however, as long as it’s an underworld entity placing the bounty
  • We will not be using Fey in this Setting, so the Fey Mark Edge is a waste
  • We can have 1 Fair Folk in the group if desired
  • Fair Folk Race Traits: Fast; +1 Luck Point; Mobility [Short Flaw]
  • Armor will initially be assigned, but you may make a list of Weapons and Other Equipment that you would like; Then I’ll roll for Availability to see what you actually end up with
.

Character Backgrounds___
Everyone's shared background is the Prolog - they are the Children of the Fall of Sendai finally grown up. Fair Folk are rare and treated well in any place they appear. For example, somewhere along the line, Killa's Character (or her folks) did something that won them the honor of the Samurai Caste - perhaps one of them was a Wu-Jen or Priest.

Basically - use the background to explain the character Archetype - why did he/she decide to become a scout, sailor, priest, etc... Keep in mind their young ages though and still green (1st Level) experience.

Chapter Fifteen:  Experience

Experience

Experience (XP) is awarded at the end of each Session at the following suggested rates:

Experience Awarded ForXP
End Of Each Session| 2
Role-Playing Bonus| 1
Completion Of An Adventure| 4 (in addition to Session XP)

The Role-Playing Bonus is awarded only for Sessions where the players’ interaction made it especially entertaining, or where the odds where stacked against them and they still prevailed.

Other Awards

When players do something extraordinary in-game, help the plot move along, role-play especially well, or come up with a good idea, they can earn a Temporary Luck Point (at the GM’s discretion).  Temporary Luck Points do not count against the character’s Maximum Luck Point Total, but are only available for use during the remainder of the Session they are earned (they are lost at the end of the Session if not used).

---

PbP Addendum

For PbP, every Week of Real-Time can be considered a Session, while a 1 Point Bonus should also be given for each Major Scene.
